How To Use XFLR5

How to do 2-D analysis

•First get your airfoil coordinates .dat file (UIUC Airfoil database)•Then open up the .dat file using Wordpad and edit it according to the pictures

Before After

How to do 2-D analysis

•Open XFLR5•Go to “File -> Open”•Then open the .dat file of the airfoil coordinates•Then go to “File -> Direct Xfoil Analysis

How to do 2-D analysis

•Go to “Polars -> Batch Analysis”•From here we can specify what kind of analysis we want to do•Under Batch Variables we can specify a Range of Reynolds number at a specific Mach number or a Reynolds number List•Then under Analysis Range we can specify a range of AoA or CL•Then under Transition Data we can specify the N critical

How to do 2-D analysis

•For “Re List” under Batch Variables go to “Edit List”•Here we can edit the Reynolds number, Mach number, and Ncrit that we want.

This Is What You Should Get

•If the data is needed then pick the polar that you want and go to “Polar -> Current Polar -> Export.

How to do 3-D analysis

•As you would with 2-D analysis, go do a Batch Analysis with the airfoil that you want. •Do a Range analysis•*NOTE* Make sure that the range covers the range of the Reynolds numbers that your wing goes through (that includes the the Root Chord and the Tip Chord of your wing)

How to do 3-D analysis

•Go to “File -> Wing Plane and Design”•Go to “Wing-Plane -> “Design a New Wing”•From here input the dimensions of your wing then hit Save and Close.

How to do 3-D analysis

•Go to “Polar -> Define an Analysis”•Pick “Polar Type” and input “Plane and Flight Data”•Click “OK” •On the right define a range of angles, then click analyze

This Is What You Should Get

•On the right click on what you want to display or hide•Can go to “Polar -> Current Polar -> Export just like Direct Xfoil Analysis
