Calculatingsurgeloadsisnotastraightforwardexerciseunfortunately.MosttimesIhaveexperiencedthistheapproachhasbeenvery,veryconservative.ie:PxAxDLF,whichisbasicallyassuminganinstantvalveclosureandassumingthesamepressurerisefortheentirepipingsystemregardlessofthelengthorconfiguration.
Itisworthspeakingtoanexperiencedprocessengineerwhohaspracticalpipingandsiteknowledge.Youneedtoknowthesurgerise,thevalveclosuretime,thevalvetype(todetermineeffectiveclosuretime),acousticvelocityandsomeotherthings.Aprocessengineercantellyouallthosethings,andtheyshouldbeabletohelpworkoutrealisticloadsdevelopedfromelbowtoelbow.
Ifyouworkwithanysubseaorpipelinesengineerstheyshouldalsobeabletohelpyou,astheywoulddealwithsubstantialsurgeloadsduetolongstraightlengthsofpipe.

HelloKuramadenz,Pleaseconfirmwhetherthepressureyouhavestatedisthesurgepressureorthelinepressure.UsuallyforamainLNGlinesasurgeanalysiswillbestudiedduringshutdownoperationinaspecialisedsoftware(eg,Pipenet).Thiswillgivetheriseinpressureinthelineduringshutdownoperations.Sincethevalvesarenotstopedasuddenthesurgepressurewillnotbethathigh.Sincethelinesizesareveryhighinyourcaseitwillbetooconservativetoconsidertheabsolutepressuredifferenceasthesurgepressure.
