Hot Rod Jump

By: Andrew CheungPhysics 10Ms. Symes

Aim

The aim of this presentation, is to find out, whether or not this jump is real, or just movie effects.

Hypothesis

My origional hypothesis, was that this jump is possible, if the ramp was reinforced and stable.

Materials

Videomicrosoft paint or adobe photoshopGoogle images

Information gathered

The average width mail truck is 1.80 meters2cm= 180 cm1cm= 90 cm4.5 cm x 90= 810 cm = 4.05 meters(jump distance)10cm x 90= 900 cm =9 meters (distance traveled) 9 meters traveled in 2 secondsthe ramp is at 15 degrees.

Legend

r is distancev is the final velocitysin is anglethis is all over gravity, which is 9.8 meters per second

Working

R = V^2 Sin 2 ∠                  g

Equals minimum speed needed

Conclusion, Was the jump possible?

The answer is no. The jump in this movie, was a failure as "Rodney Kimble" was unable jump the mail truck, as the ramp broke. Even if the ramp were reinforced, he would have similar results to the movies, because he traveled at 4.5 meters per second. The minimum speed needed, was 8.9 meters per second, in order to jump the 1.80 meter truck.This resulted in serious injuries.
