ARTICLE FROM FRANKENPOST, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2012
The only remaining Army location in Upper Franconia in Hof will bear, in the
future, the name Oberfranken barracks. It was reported on Friday, just in time for
the end of the year. There is good news – Mayor Dr. Harald Fichtner is pleased
with the renaming of the General Huettner Barracks. The name Upper Franconia
Barracks is appropriate because it underlines the strong anchor of the
Bundeswehr in this region. Dr. Harald Fichtner particularly thanked the German
Federal Armed Forces in this regard and in particular the location elders Colonel
Norbert Reineke for a very good and trusting relationship. It was announced
proudly by Colonel Reynard that the Chief of Joint Support already approved the
new name.
The City Council will deal immediately in the first sitting of the New Year with the
renaming of the Kaserne to make it official immediately. Everyone is convinced of
a very unanimous consent of the City Council to be in favor of the name
change. Hof does not have many facilities with Oberfranken in its name. The
name Upper Franconia Barracks reinforces the centrality and the presence of the
Bundeswehr in Hof Mayor Dr. Fichtner stated. The recent discussions
surrounding the name change of the barracks has now been brought to a
successful fruition.
NOTE FROM HRA MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN PHIL RUTH
Fellow Hofers,
I am seeking your assistance to help me locate our Missing Hofers. What I am
asking isn’t really difficult. You don’t have to do any searching on-line, or any
physical activities. I am simply asking you to do some in-depth, mental recall
from when you were stationed in Hof, and working and probably socializing with
your fellow Hofers. I need you to try to remember where any of them might have
said they came from; their hometown or where they attended school; the name of
any of their siblings; anything that can give me information to use in my
searches.
Below are names, year in Hof, and organization. Just dwell on the name and let
your mind wander back to our “good ole’ days”. When you come up with
something that might help, please send it to me, regardless of how trivial it might
seem to you. E-MAIL ME AT afnsagdret@myactv.net. Thanks! WE WILL HAVE 50
NAMES PER WEEK UNTIL WE HAVE LISTED ALL.

FLYBY LIST: None reported to us this past week.
LADIES SERVING IN HEAVEN: None reported to us this past week.
OFF THE BEATEN PATH: Condolences from German Federal President, Chancellor, and
Foreign Minister on December 14th
Newtown, CT Tragedy
Germans have reacted with shock and sorrow to the attack in Newtown, Connecticut, that killed
so many young children and their educators on December 14. Political leaders have expressed
condolences on behalf of German citizens to the US President and the American people.
Federal President Joachim Gauck sent a letter of condolence to US President Barack Obama on
Saturday, December 15, 2012:
"It is with great shock and profound sorrow that I have learned of the horrifying attack on the
Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, an attack that has taken the lives of both so many
defenseless children full of hope for the future and of their teachers. My heartfelt condolences and
those of my fellow Germans go out to you and the American people. Our thoughts and deepest
sympathy are with the families of the victims at this time of tragedy."
Chancellor Angela Merkel also expressed her sympathies:
"I am deeply saddened by the news of the events in Newtown. We again stand shocked before an
act that we cannot comprehend, an act that has brought indescribable suffering to many families
so shortly before Christmas. My heart is heavy when I think of the murdered students and
teachers. My deepest condolences go out to their loved ones and I wish them strength and
consolation. May they not be alone in their hour of pain."
Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle called the act a dreadful tragedy and expressed his deepest
sympathy for the families of the innocent victims of this horrible crime.

FROM MARGIT ‘THIEROFF’ NORWOOD ON NEWSLETTER
“Mel Hamill’s write-ups on Hof’s historical landmarks were real interesting. I had
no idea that the Theresienstein originally was called the Froechlichenstein, and I
will have to mention that to my mother’s first cousin, Fred Beyerlein. Fred is the
only remaining living relative of that generation of my family, and is the family
historian. His grandfather, my great-grandfather Johann Georg Beyerlein, at one
time was the head gardener of the Theresienstein. One of his specialties was
developing tree roses via grafting techniques. He was born in Selbitz in 1860 and
died in Hof in 1933.”
“My sister Elfriede and I weren't the first family members who immigrated to the
U.S., Johann Georg Beyerlein's son, Johann/John Beyerlein (cousin Fred's
father/my grandfather's brother), was born in Hof in 1895 and immigrated to the
United States in 1925. He arrived at Ellis Island on the ship Deutschland, and
eventually ended up in East Longmeadow, MA where he died in 1979.” Margit –

“Lloyd David was a ‘special’ kind of person; loved by so, so many, but by none as
much as his family. We will miss him with every breath we take – Mom Rosie
Queen and husband Gary; Dad Lloyd G. Geigley and wife Lorna; John Geigley,
brother and his wife Melissa; Christina Geigley Roberts, sister and her husband
Anthony; Niece Alexandra Roberts; and Nephews Jake Geigley and Jeremy
Roberts.”
“THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH. GOD BLESS.” Rosie
FROM PAULINE MCAULIFFE ON MEMBER BOB MCAULIFFE
Received via Stu Sturdevant on Thursday, January 10, 2013:
“Dear Friends – It is with a very sad heart I tell you my Dear husband Bob is in the
hospital and not expected to live much longer. I hope you will say a prayer for
him.” Love, Pauline
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bob, Pauline and the McAuliffe Family. Bob &
Pauline reside in Anaheim, CA and Bob was in Hof, 6915th in ’68.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH: CRUISE AFTER REUNION (NOT AFFLIATED WITH HRA)
The International Palms Resort is going to assist those going on the cruise after
the reunion by providing FREE parking at the resort while on your cruise, and
arranging for transportation to & from the resort and port. The cost will be $10.00
per person for the round trip. This beats the heck out of the $10 per day parking
fee at the port. Later this summer, Don Riverkamp will be asking those wanting
to use this transportation to let him know, and he & Bill Ward will provide the
names to our International Palms Resort Management Contact.
THE FOLLOWING HAVE ALREADY BOOKED THEIR STATEROOMS FOR THE CRUISE AFTER THE

PASSING OF HRA MEMBER ROBERT A. MCAULIFFE
Received from Stu Sturdevant last week on the passing of Robert ‘Bob’ McAuliffe, at age 78,
Anaheim, CA. (Photo attached of Bob at 2007 Reno Reunion)
“On January 15, 2013, Bob McAuliffe passed away at 5:40 PM. Bob passed away quietly
surrounded by his family. Please offer your prayers for him, Pauline and family. Bob spent 20
plus years in the Air Force as a Security Policeman; so as we say in the police community – he
has turned in his weapon’s card and stood his last guard mount. Knowingly, he is with St. Peter
guarding the Gates of Heaven. We will all miss you Bob—Thank you for your Service to your
Country and also for your friendship. Your fellow Cops.”

OFF THE BEATEN PATH: DEAR ABBY PASSED AWAY
Pauline Phillips, the longtime writer of “Dear Abby” advice column who became a confessor and
friend to millions of newspaper readers that sought her guidance on the endless conundrums of
everyday living, died January 16, 2013 in Minneapolis, MN at the age of 94. Mrs. Phillips had
Alzheimer’s disease.
Abigail Van Buren, as Mrs. Phillips was called in print, easily ranked among the best-known
American women of her generation. For more than four decades, with her words appearing in
hundreds of newspapers, she functioned as no less than an arbiter of human virtues and
foibles. Mrs. Phillips was ever at the ready with a zinger to buck up or occasionally knock down
an advice seeker.

JACK WALLACE ON HOSPICE CARE
Last week, Jack’s wife Marge, via Chuck Wilson email, informed us that Jack Wallace, 6915th, Hof
’60-62, Russian linguist, and HRA Member in 2010, is on Hospice Care as of Wednesday, January
23rd
.
“Dear family and friends – Jack is on Hospice Care as of today. As you all know Jack has been
under treatment since last July for a very rare and fast growing form of Carcinoid Cancer. It is
very difficult to treat and chemotherapy was not recommended. A hormone treatment was started
in December, which was to treat the symptoms of the disease, mainly. Even though he is weak
and his voice is weak, Jack welcomes phone calls and short home visits. We send our love to all.
Please keep us in your prayers.” Jack and Marge – jackwallace02@comcast.net

LADIES SERVING IN HEAVEN: None reported to us this past week.
OFF THE BEATEN PATH: FROM MEL HAMILL, HRA ADJUTANT VIA INTERNET
OVERVIEW OF THE GERMAN SCHOOL SYSTEM
Sound initial opportunities for everyone are a precondition for education and achievement. Hence,
education in Germany encompasses nine years of compulsory education for all children. Once
children have reached six years of age, they as a rule attend primary school for four years, before
being able to transfer to a variety of secondary schools: Hauptschule, Realschule, Gymnasium.
The standards and balancing of practical versus theoretical lessons differ.
• Hauptschule (the least academic, elementary school) until grade 9.
• Realschule until grade 10.
• Gymnasium (High School) until grade 12 or 13 (with Abitur as exit exam, qualifying for
university).
• Gesamtschule (comprehensive school) with all the options of the three "careers"
above.
• Upon completion of one of these schools the graduates may also choose to start a
professional career with an apprenticeship in the Berufsschule (vocational school). The
Berufsschule is typically attended twice a week during a two, three, or three-and-a-half
year apprenticeship; the remainder of days is spent working at a company. This model
offers the students knowledge of both theory and practice. In some fields the
apprenticeship is training expertise that is required by law (special positions in a bank,
assistance of a lawyer ...).
In Germany, the 16 federal states hold the exclusive responsibility in the field of education. The
federal parliament and the federal government can influence the educational system only via the
financial aid granted to the states. As a result, there are several different school systems;
however, in every state the starting point is Grundschule (elementary school) for a period of 4
years. It is often difficult for families to move from one state to another, for there are rather
different curricula for virtually every subject.
LIFE IN A GERMAN SCHOOL
While German students are in no way different from other students across the world, there are
organizational differences. The main points are delineated below. Yet, it should be noted that
there are additional differences across the 16 states of Germany.
• Exams (which are always supervised) tend to be essay based, rather than multiple choice.
• At every school type, students study one foreign language (in almost all cases English) for
at least five years. In Gymnasium, students can choose from a wider range of languages
(mostly English, French, or Latin) as the first language in 5th grade, and a second mandatory
language in 6th or 7th grade. Some categories of Gymnasium also require an additional third
language (such as Spanish, Italian, Russian or Ancient Greek) in 9th or 11th grade.
• At the end of their schooling, students usually take a cumulative written and oral
examination (Abitur in Gymnasiums or Abschlussprüfung in Realschulen and Hauptschulen).
• Report cards (Zeugnisse) are issued twice a year at the end of the semester, usually in
February and June or July. The grade scale ranges from 1 to 6, where 1 is "Excellent" and 6
is "Failed". Students who fail to meet minimum standards are required to attend to the
previous class once more before they are allowed to be transferred (which happens to
almost 5% of students every year).
College and university
Generally, it can be said that Germany does not boast "colleges" in the sense that is used in the
US. Upon leaving school, students may choose to continue their educational career and transfer
to university. Still, most (male) students will serve a year's military or civil service (Zivildienst)
beforehand.
The Gymnasium graduation (Abitur) enables the student to attend to any university. The
Abiturdurchschnittsnote (similar to GPA in the US, or A-Level results in the UK) is the decicive
criterion in granting university places; an institution may quote an entry requirement for a
particular course. This is called numerus clausus (literally "restricted number"), but it generally
only applies to popular courses with a limited number of openings; for example a medical course
could require an Abitur grade of between 1.0 to 1.5, equivalent to a 3.9 - 4.5 GPA in the USA
approximately.
German university students largely choose their own programme of study and professors choose
their own subjects for research and teaching. This elective system often results in students
spending many years at university before graduating, and is currently subject to a reappraisal.
Students choose and switch universities according to their interests and the opportunities of each
university. Occasionally, students attend two, three or more different universities in the course of
their studies. This freedom of mobility between German universities is unknown to the USA, the
UK, or France.
University degrees: Changes related to the so-called Bologna-Agreement have started taking
place to establish a more internationally accredited system, which includes new course structures
- the Bachelor degree and the Master degree - and ETCS credits. Consequentially the majority
courses lead up to a Bachelor or Master degree. The achievement of a doctoral degree usually
takes another 3-5 years, with no formal classes, but independent research under the guidance of a
single professor. Most doctoral candidates work as teaching- or research assistants, and are paid
a reasonably competitive salary. This is different in medicine, where an M.D. is (effectively)
required for work and hence a more streamlined process applies.
However, there is another type of post-Abitur university training available in Germany: the
Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Science), which offer the same degrees as regular
universities, but regularly focus on applied science as opposed to basic research and merely
academic subjects. Students begin their courses together and as a rule graduate together and
there is little choice in their schedule. To get on-the-job experience, an internship semester is a
mandatory element of studying at a University of Applied Science. After 3,5 years approximately
(depending on how a student arranges the courses he or she takes during his or her studies, and
on whether he or she has to repeat courses) a University of Applied Science student can draw on
a complete education and can easily move on to working life. Graduates of Universities of Applied
Science obtain a Bachelor degree.
There are no university-sponsored scholarships in Germany. However, a number of private and
public institutions grant scholarships, usually to cover the cost of living and books. Likewise,
there is a law (Bafög or Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz) that provides needy students with
up to 550 EUR per month for 4-5 years if they or their parents are unable to put up the costs
involved with studying. Part of this money can be given as an interest-free loan and has to be paid
back upon completion of the university career.

NOTE FROM HRA MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN PHIL RUTH
Fellow Hofers,
I am seeking your assistance to help me locate our Missing Hofers. What I am asking isn’t really
difficult. You don’t have to do any searching on-line, or any physical activities. I am simply asking
you to do some in-depth, mental recall from when you were stationed in Hof, and working and
probably socializing with your fellow Hofers. I need you to try to remember where any of them
might have said they came from; their hometown or where they attended school; the name of any
of their siblings; anything that can give me information to use in my searches, including the age
of the missing person when you knew them in Hof.
Below are names, year in Hof, and organization. Just dwell on the name and let your mind wander
back to our “good ole’ days”. When you come up with something that might help, please send it
to me, regardless of how trivial it might seem to you. E-MAIL ME AT afnsagdret@myactv.net. Thanks! WE WILL HAVE 50 NAMES PER WEEK UNTIL WE

VALENTINE’S DAY – THURSDAY – FEBRUARY 14, 2013
A VERY HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY TO ALL HRA MEMBERS, SPOUSES,
CHILDREN, GRANDKIDS, FAMILY, FELLOW HOFERS, AND FRIENDS!
Saint Valentine’s Day, commonly shortened to Valentine’s Day, is an
annual holiday held on February 14th
celebrating love and affection
between intimate companions. The day is named after one or more early
Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine, and was established by Pope
Gelasius I in 496 AD. Pope Paul VI deleted it from the General Roman
Calendar of Saints in 1969. It is traditionally a day on which lovers
express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering
confectionery, and sending greeting cards. The day first because
associated with the romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in
the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love
flourished. Modern Valentine’s Day symbols include the heart-shaped
outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th
Century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced
greeting cards. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!
NOTE AND OFFER FROM HRA MEMBER PAUL C. FISHER
“Many thanks to you and the executive board for your service to the Hof Reunion Association. My
wife and I were at sea with our son last year during the Hof Reunion, and were sorry we missed
the event. We plan to visit Verwandte und Freunde there this year. Unfortunately, the numbers of
the Air Force group that arrived in Hof on a cold December in 1954 have dwindled down to a
precious few (if that many!).
For Valentine’s Day, I would like to offer a free copy of my e-book, The Adventures of a Good and
Decent Man, to any former Hofers that might be interested in an e-book that doesn’t fit any one
common genre.
My background as a Czech Linguist that has traveled extensively, if reflected in my principal
character, Mark Davidson, who covers a lot of territory in the six stories in this anthology. The
first two stories are bound together under the title, “Love at First Sight”, thus the inspiration for
this Valentine’s offer.
E-book owners or those with a tablet that includes an e-reader application should contact me,
Paul Fisher (Hof ’54-56) at fishermp@att.net. The e-book is available in an e-pub version for the
Nook and many other e-readers, and a mobile version for the Kindle. If you have a Kindle
address, I may be able to send it directly to your reader. Please let me know which version you
want.” Paul Fisher (a.k.a – Hellmut Edelmann)
MESSAGE FROM HRA MEMBER TOM MCKINNEY
“First – I’m looking forward to the HRA Reunion in Cocoa Beach, Florida this year.
Second – Attaching photo and story of my continuing running pursuits a year ago when I completed the
Space Coast Marathon in Cocoa, Florida and, at age 70, was awarded third place for my efforts. After
recovering from that race I continued to run through 2012 and then last fall, I resumed competition locally in
Palm Coast, Florida. This past Thanksgiving I received a second place trophy for a 15K (9.2 mile) race, and
two weeks ago, a first place trophy for a 10 mile race (Photo Attached). Of course these races are scored by
age group, and that's what's so great about outliving most of one's competition in this sport. Even though my
times are getting slower the other runners in my age group are dropping out and my finishing places are
getting closer to the front. But, at age 71, I'm not complaining but am pleased that my passion for running
has resulted in good physical health as well as recognition for my efforts.
My point?? – I would like to encourage all fellow Hofers to continue some physical activity to maintain their
healthy lifestyles so we can continue to participate in those fantastic reunions. It doesn't have to be running
(like mine) but should include some cardio and weight bearing activity (walking, bowling, dancing, golf) to
help promote our health as we get further and further from that time we left Hof. I hope to see many of you
in Cocoa Beach for this September's reunion.” Tom McKinney – Hof (1961-63, 1965-68)
NOTE FROM TOM MIKLOICHE ON HIS NEW PHOTO LINK
“Below is a link to my new Photo storage website that now has all the
Albums and Videos that I was able to salvage from the old website. You
can scroll over an album and the associated pictures etc., should come
right up for viewing. Click on one of the Albums and when the picture
appears, click on that, and once it loads you can click on sideshow and
it will go from there.” Mick
http://tmikct.blogspot.com/?view=flipcard
NEWS FROM HRA MEMBER FRED MIDDLEDORF
“My companion in life, Brenda Marshall, broke her ankle in two places
on January 24th
, in our laundry room. Right now, she is in a cast that

“On a very sad note, I lost my brother Kirk, when he passed away in his
sleep sometime on the morning of February 7, 2013. Kirk would have
been 64 this coming August. They have not yet confirmed it yet, but
they feel that it may have been his heart. Kirk hadn’t been well for a long
time, and was almost always in some kind of pain the last few
years. Your prayers for him would be most welcome.”
Your Fellow Hofer Fred – fmiddledorf@comcast.net
Please keep Fred, Brenda, and Fred’s brother Kirk in your thoughts and
prayers. Our sympathy and prayers go out to Fred and family.

SYLVIA ANN BRADY – JANUARY 30, 2013
We received the following note from HRA Member Sam Brady on
Monday informing us of his wife’s passing on Wednesday, January 30th
.
“I just wanted to inform the association that my wife, Sylvia Ann Brady, 72, went to be with her
Lord and Savior Wednesday January 30, 2013 at Willow Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation in
Goldsboro, NC. She suffered from dementia and experienced a couple of congestive heart
failures in the last few months. Sylvia was a homemaker and for most of adult life she took care
of children. Mrs. Brady was a loving Mother not only to her own, but also to anyone that needed a
Mom or Grandmother. She loved to cook and when she did she cooked enough to feed the
neighborhood. She will be missed by everyone.”

NOTE FROM HRA SECRETARY DON RIVERKAMP
“I received an email this past Sunday afternoon from a wowway.com
user member that stated that he had not been receiving the weekly
updates the past couple months. I called him, and we tried many
different emails to his wowway.com address and they all went to his
junk mail. He is going to call his wowway.com people and see why this
is happening.” This particular situation was resolved late Sunday
afternoon. “However, IF any current HRA member does not receive the
weekly update by NOON on Tuesday mornings, PLEASE let me
know.” DON

PASSING OF JACK D. WALLACE, 6915th OPS, HOF ’60-62
Jack had a rare and fast growing form of Carcinoid Cancer.
From the Roseville, CA Press-Tribune Newspaper, Saturday, 2-23-2013:
Jack Donald Wallace (82) – January 17, 1931 to February 18, 2013 (PHOTO)
Passed away after a short illness on February 18, 2013, at his home with his family by his side. He
was born in Broken Bow, OK on January 17, 1931, the third of eight sons born to Wyatt and Irene
Wallace. Jack's dad worked for cotton farmers as a sharecropper. As soon as Jack could walk he
joined his family in the fields picking cotton. When Jack was two years old, the family moved to
Cooter, MO. In 1948 at age 17, Jack joined the United States Air Force. From the moment Jack
entered the service he began his college studies, attending night classes wherever he was
stationed, in the States or overseas. In 1973 he graduated from the University of Maryland in
Heidelberg, Germany with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Russian language. In 1963 while attending
Syracuse University, completing his second year of Russian language training, he found a cute
girl singing in the choir in a Baptist Church. Jack and Marge will be married 50 years in May of this
year.
The military life provided endless adventures, travel and memories for Jack and Marge and their
two sons, Bryan and David. Jack served his country for 27 years; the first 11 years as a military
policeman, and then 16 years in the intelligence service as a Russian linguist. One of Jack's
passions was pitching fast pitch softball wherever he was stationed, and he later became an NSA
umpire.
Jack and his family retired from the Air Force in 1975 and settled in Roseville, where Jack
attended UC Davis to pursue a Master's degree in Russian language and a teaching credential. He
taught 16 years in the Roseville High School system. From an early age, Jack had a love for
mechanics and old cars. Many Rosevillians will remember Jack driving around town in his blue
1960 Corvair.
Through the years Jack was actively involved in city politics, including serving eight years on the
Roseville Planning Commission and running for City Council. He is considered by many to be the
most well known political activist for Roseville citizens, addressing commissions and City Council
on many occasions.
For many years Jack was a 'sought after' mediator, always being asked how to solve conflicts.
Jack will be remembered by his calm words of wisdom to so many people. 'Set high standards
and stick to them,' he would say. Other words of wisdom from Jack: 'It isn't what you take with
you when you leave this Earth; it is what you leave behind that 'counts.' His motto for his
tombstone will be 'AT LEAST I TRIED.' Jack will be missed by so many.
Jack is survived by his wife, Marge; son Bryan and wife Kathy; son David and wife Dani; brother
Tom, and wife Beverly; three grandchildren, Luke Rachael, and Melanie; and two great-
grandchildren, Haley and Kai. He is also survived by dozens of loving nieces, nephews, and
cousins.
Interment will be at Exeter District Cemetery, Exeter, CA at the corner of Marienette and Highway
65, with full military honors on Monday, February 25th at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Centerpoint Community Church
or Loving Angels In Home Care.
Our condolences, sympathy, thoughts, and prayers go out to Marge, the entire Wallace family,
relatives, and friends. God Bless.
Thanks! WE WILL HAVE 50 NAMES PER WEEK UNTIL WE
HAVE LISTED ALL.

MESSAGE FROM HRA GUEST BOOK THIS PAST SATURDAY
“I too was a member of Charlie Flt from 1963-1965. I remember Curt Lawson, but not Jim Stevens,
although I do remember band members Don Bodiker and Agee. My roommates were C A Russell,
Stan Heath, Charlie Bedell and Paul Holmgren. Stan worked at the base Theater and I worked at
the Base Bowling Alley. We were both working the night President Kennedy was shot and the
base commander order both places closed immediately. Really loved my time in Hof and wanted
to say hello to all Hofers.”

HRA MEMBER ROBERT ‘BOB’ JARBOE IN NURSING HOME
Thanks to Ray Szyperski & Phil Ruth, we found out that Bob Jarboe (7307 Dispensary, Hof ’69)
had moved from College Park, MD to Kansas after his wife Marilyn had passed away to be with his
daughter. Bob had been misdiagnosed while still in Maryland, prescribed wrong medications, and
now has an irreversible chemical imbalance. He has been in a wheel chair since last September,
with little realistic memory and dementia. Ray found the daughter’s phone number and called
her. Donna told Ray that her father would probably welcome any HRA news, letters, and/or
cards. You may send them to Bob’s daughter at the below address and she will take them to Bob
since she visits him every day.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH: FROM HRA WEBMASTER JERRY MANGAS
http://www.cnbc.com/id/100493887 - SCIENTISTS CLAIM 72 IN THE NEW 30
“Human longevity has improved so rapidly over the past century that 72 is the new 30, scientists
say.
Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany, said
progress in lowering the odds of death at all ages has been so rapid since 1900 that life
expectancy has risen faster than it did in the previous 200 millennia since modern man began to
evolve from hominid species.
The pace of increase in life expectancy has left industrialized economies unprepared for the cost
of providing retirement income to so many for so long.
The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United
States, looked at Swedish and Japanese men – two countries with the longest life expectancy
today. It concluded that their counterparts in 1800 would have had lifespan that were closer to
those of the earliest hunter-gatherer humans than they would to adult men in both countries
today.
Those primitive hunter-gatherers, at age 30, had the same odds of dying as a modern Swedish or
Japanese man would face at 72.”
