Hello Teachers, Parents, Students and Sequim Community;
Yikes! Where did March go? March was such a busy month in Hi-Cap so I’m combining the March and
April Newsletter to share all the highlights of what was and what’s to come.
The elementary enrichment students “played with their food” by manipulating pretzel sticks to
practice reasoning strategies with geometric shapes.
The final testing and identification for the 2015-2016 school year took place and was completed. All
parents of referred students received notification by mail during spring break. Permission to serve and
appeals documentation was included.
Thirty-three Hi-Cap students attended the Young Writer’s Conference at Peninsula College in Port
Angeles on March 22nd. The all day conference hosted two authors, several writing sessions, and
focused sharing sessions.
The fourth and fifth grade Hi-Cap students hosted a WAX MUSEUM to celebrate their learning and
research writing about inspirational people.
I hope you all enjoyed your spring break. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions. I look
forward to hearing from you!
Warmly,
~Robin Forrest~

Students used “hands on” manipulating of pretzels to problem solve. Utilizing the work of Marcy Cook, students were encouraged to discover patterns and experiment with numbers and shapes to arrive at solution sets. Students were
expected to maintain an open mind, be curious, explore, and think divergently. And they got to eat pretzels!

Highly Capable students in grades first through sixth were invited to the Young Writer’s
Conference at Peninsula College on March 22. Thirty-three students attended along with ten parent
chaperones. We were inspired by two guest authors, Suzanne Selfors and Stephanie Guerra. Students
shared prepared manuscripts and participated in a focused writing lesson. It was a wonderful learning
experience. A special thank you to the AMAZING chaperones who helped make this experience so
worthwhile. See highlights on page 5.

The fourth and fifth graders had a wonderful time hosting a WAX MUSEUM
of past and present inspirational figures. We had an AMAZING turn out with
Disneyland-like lines out the door. Thank you to all those who attended! The
students worked incredibly hard to make this event happen. Each student
researched an inspirational person, wrote a research paper, created a presen-
tation board, and dressed and posed in character. Student wax figures would
“come alive” when their button was pushed to give an informational speech to
the guests. See highlights on page 4.
If there are any teachers who would like to host their own WAX MUSEUM
research project and would like my templates and rubrics, I will post them on
the shared drive for you (teachershare/SMS/Forrest_Differentiation). Please
message me since I have additional print resources that may be helpful.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR: THERE WILL BE NO 4TH/5TH HI-CAP
PULLOUT ON APRIL 21ST DUE TO SMS EARLY RELEASE.
