CURRENT STATE
Old harbour and dock yard area: ship yard, ice hockey hall,
boat services, public sauna and some restaurants.
Harbour area with two cruise ship quays and one quay
mainly for grain shippings.
Development ideas since 2006.
Land ownership by the city.
HERNESAARI PLANNING PRINCIPLES
Cruise tourism important for the city.
One quay in West Harbour for residential use
► new quay in Hernesaari.
Hernesaari the main cruise ship harbour in Helsinki:
- already nearly 90 % of the cruise ships use Hernesaari
& West Harbour quays
- vessel sizes growing and the fairway to the heart of the
city limited in width
New quay facilitates up to 360 m long vessels.
Residential and service area with cruise ship harbour,
marina, cafes, restaurants and hotels, conference services,
water buses,…
Location near the city centre & main attractions.
Location near the other Port of Helsinki harbours
► easy to centralize cruise ship services to one main quay
area (mooring, waste management, wastewater reception).
Finnish Seamen's Service: remittances to home countries,
easy access to Internet, possibility to spend time outside
the vessel.
