One Day Seminar on Spherical and Toric

Soft Contact Lenses

Objective

The one day seminar was aimed at imparting important skills to enhance participants’ clinical practice and ensuring

successful contact lens dispensing and patient satisfaction by giving an overview of spherical and soft toric lenses

along with their selection, fitting, dispensing, stabilization techniques and product availability. The seminar also

intended to teach the participants about the benefits of silicone hydrogels, the difference between silicone hydrogels

and hydrogel lenses and demonstrate how the trends in contact lens prescription are inclining towards silicone

hydrogels in recent decades.

Participants

The seminar was attended by 42 participants including practitioners and students. The students were from Bausch

and Lomb School of Optometry-Hyderabad and Hyderabad Central University-Hyderabad. Interns and educators

from SIHR & LC Karigiri Hospital-Vellore and practitioner from Dr Rohatgi's Vision Eye Hospital-Usha Opticals- Kolkata

were also a part of the seminar.

Introduction: Introduction was done by Apoorva Chauhan-Program Officer, India Vision Institute familiarizing

the participants with learning objectives of the seminar.

Facilitators: The seminar was facilitated by Dr Kalika Bandamwar, Dr Nagaraju Konda, Ms Arifa Begum, Mr

Rambabu Putta, Ms Aparna Vadlakonda from the Brien Holden Vision Pvt Ltd India and Mr Srikanth Dumpati

from the L V Prasad Eye Institute.

Topics Covered

Silicone Hydrogels: This topic covered the basic differences between Silicone Hydrogel and Hydrogel contact lenses, benefits of Silicone Hydrogels and the recent trend of prescribing silicone hydrogels. Spherical Contact Lens: This covered the importance of parameter selection in lens fitting, various fitting characteristics (steep, flat and optimal), dispensing and care regime and trouble shooting. Toric Contact Lens: This covered different methods of stabilization techniques and its significance for toric soft CL fitting, selection of toric soft contact lens parameters and finalize the optimal lens, dispensing and care regime and trouble shooting. Multiple choice, open ended and ‘fill in the blanks’ questions were added in between the presentations for the students to have a better understanding of each sessions and also to evaluate.
