JOSEPHWALSH|JOSEPHWALSHSTUDIOJosephWalshisaninternationallyrenowneddesignermaker,whoseworkreflectsanunderstandingandsympatheticuseofmaterial,anintimaterelationshipbetweenfindingformsandcreatingstructuresandacontinuityandresolvefromconcepttomaking.BasedinCoCork,Ireland,hisstudioemploysaskilledteamwhoachievehisambitiouspieces.Frombothculturallyandacademicallydiversebackgroundssuchas theFurnitureCollegeLetterfrack (Ireland), theShinrinTakumi Juku (Japan)andLesCompagnonsduDevoir(France),theteamcontinuouslychallengeexistingpracticetorealisehischallengingconceptsinan innovative environment.With an ethos of continual learning and dedication to excellence, JosephWalshStudiohasnowestablisheditselfasoneoftheleadingstudioworkshopsinEurope.

JOSEPHWALSHSTUDIOINTERNSHIPPROGRAMMEThe JosephWalshStudio internshipprogrammeoffersa9-monthdesignstudio internship toa limitednumber of candidates. Under the supervision of a Senior Design Technician at the studio, thosewhoparticipateintheprogrammewillworkalongsidemembersofboththedesignandworkshopteams.Bythe end of the programme, which includes instruction frommembers of the team as well asmasterclasses fromexternalparticipants, the internwillhaveunderstandingandknowledgeofeachphase intheJosephWalshStudiocommissioningprocess,fromconcepttoinstallation.

ENTRYCRITERIA§ Successfulapplicantswillhavecompletedarecognisedthirdlevelcourseand/orcompletedabasic

apprenticeshipprogramme.§ Theywillbeorganisedandefficient,havetheabilitytoworksuccessfullyaspartofateamandhave

thedesiretolearn.§ Internswillberequiredtosupplytheirownhandtoolsandhand-heldpowertools.

PERIOD&DURATIONOFINTERNSHIPThis is a 9-month internship programme, commencing in September and running until May of thefollowingyear.Theprogrammeisfull-timewith internshavingthesameannual leaveallocationasthestudioteamoverthatperiod(i.e.15days).

DELIVERYOFINTERNSHIPPROGRAMMEEach intern will completed their internship programme under the supervision of a Senior DesignTechnicianatJosephWalshStudio.

PROGRAMMEDETAILSThe programme will be divided into three modules. At the end of each module, the intern will beexpectedtohaveachievedaspecificstandardinanumberoftasks-assetoutbyhis/hersupervisor.Ifthis standardhasbeenachieved, they can thenprogress to thenextmodule.As skill levelsmay vary,internshipprogrammeswillbedesignedonanindividualbasis,howeverthefollowingisindicativeoftheoverallprogrammecontent:Module1(1–3months)

- IntroductiontoJosephWalshStudio;historyofthestudio,understandingoftheworkshopethosandappreciationoftheoverallstandardexpected

- Health&safety;guidelines,bestpracticeandunderstandingofthestandardrequiredatJosephWalshStudio

- Initialbriefandconceptphase;preparationofsketchdrawings,CAD2Dlinesandsketchmodels- Anintroductiontoclientpresentation

Module2(4–6months)- Modelmakingprocess;woodorfoamsculpting,photoshootandclientpresentation- Technicaldrawingsandengineeringspecifications- Anintroductiontoandunderstandingofmaterialselectionandpreparation- Anintroductiontoandunderstandingofthemakingprocess

Module3(7–9months) - Finishing- Finalphotoshoot- Packing- Installation

Overall§ InternLog;eachinternwillberequiredtokeepalogordiary,recordingtheirdailyexperiencesand

scheduleofwork.Thiswillbesubmitted to their supervisoronamonthlybasis.At theendof theprogrammeboththeinternandthestudiowillretainacopy.

§ JosephWalsh Studioworkshop standard; it is expected that all internswill, on completion of theprogramme,havereachedtheJosephWalshStudiostandardofworkinanumberofareas.Thisnotonlyappliestotechnicalabilityandskill,butalsotoorganisational,timemanagementandproblemsolvingskillsaswellasdemonstrationofinnovationintheworkandintheworkenvironment.

VISITINGTUTOR

RobertInghamRobertInghamtrainedatbothLoughboroughCollegeandLeedsCollegeofArt,followedbyadegreeatLeedsUniversity.AsaneducatorheassistedJohnMakepeaceintheestablishmentofParnhamCollegebefore becoming Principle for twenty years. He has also worked with Buckinghamshire ChilternsUniversity College, the Centre for Furniture Craftsmanship inMaine,GMITLetterfrack Collegeand hasworked with JosephWalsh Studio, in an advisory capacity, since 2006. He has exhibited widely, is amember of Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, has been granted the Freedom of the City ofLondonandisaFellowoftheSocietyofDesignerCraftsmen.

EXTERNALCOLLABORATIONSInternswillhavetheopportunitytoparticipateinprojectswithexternalcollaboratorsincluding:ArupsConsultantsfromArups,aglobalfirmofdesigners,planners,engineersandtechnicalspecialists,whoofferingabroadrangeofprofessionalservicesforthebuiltenvironment,haveworkedwithJosephWalshStudioonvariousprojectssince2010SimplyRhinoSimplyRhinoLtd.,supplyRhinoSoftwareandallitskeyPlug-Ins,offersupportandhaveprovidedexperttrainingintheUKforoveradecade.InadditiontoJosephWalshStudiotheirclientshaveincludedAntonyGormley,Foster+Partners,HeatherwickStudio,MarkNewsonLtd.andZahaHadidArchitects

REVIEWANDASSESSMENTAttheendofthe internshipprogrammethe internwillhaveaformalreviewwiththeirsupervisorandJosephWalsh. Internswillbeassessedbasedonbothintellectualandtechnicianabilityaswellastheiroverallcommitmenttotheprogramme.

EXPENSESJosephWalshStudioInternshipsareunpaidhoweverallparticipantswillreceivean€800euromonthlyinexpensestoassistinaccommodationandsubsistence.
