The two-time defending BCS national champion Alabama Crimson Tide returns 14 starters and 48 lettermen for the 2013 season with 23
lettermen and six starters on offense, 23 lettermen and seven starters on defense and punter Cody Mandell returning on special teams.
Quarterback AJ McCarron headlines the returning starters on offense after setting the school record in 2012 with 30 touchdowns passes last
season with only three interceptions. His entire receiving corps also returns with 2012 Freshman All-American Amari Cooper, senior Kevin
Norwood and junior Christion Jones anchoring the unit along with Kenny Bell and Chris Black. Veteran tight end Michael Williams has departed
and the Tide must replace three starters along the offensive line, but two awards candidates will look to lead the line: Cyrus Kouandjio at left tackle
and Anthony Steen at right guard. Ryan Kelly appears to be in line to replace Bar rett Jones at center while Brian Vogler is the probable choice to
get the bulk of Williams duties at tight end.
The defense features at least one returning star ter on each level with 76 combined starts among defensive end Ed Stinson, linebackers C.J.
Mosley, Trey DePriest and Adrian Hubbard along with defensive backs Deion Belue and HaHa Clinton-Dix. Add veteran safety Vinnie Sunseri
and the Tide returns 84 career starts on defense. Alabamas returning defensive personnel accounted for 68 percent of the tackles in 2012 along
with 67 percent of the sacks and interceptions.
Veteran punter Cody Mandell is back to anchor the special teams after setting the school single-season record with a 44.3 yards per punt average
in 2012, when he booted 14 punts over 50 yards and landed 19 inside the 20-yard line.
Alabama is armed with the nations No. 1 recruiting class, a group that combined with the returning roster gives the Crimson Tide a potent
squad that could be primed for a run at another Southeastern Conference title and possible contention for a third straight national championship.
The 2013 schedule provides many challenges and gives Alabama fans some of the most exciting games in college football. The Crimson Tide
slate features a marquee non-conference game with Virginia Tech in the season opener at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, a venue known well by
Tide fans. After an early bye week, a dangerous trip to Texas A&M will be looming against an Aggie team that handed Alabama its only loss in
2012. The Crimson Tide finally will get to the home opener on Sept. 21 when former Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain brings his
Colorado State Rams to Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Crimson Tides SEC home opener will follow on Sept. 28. After a non-conference tilt against
Georgia State, Alabama will travel to Kentucky on Oct. 12 and return home for Arkansas on Oct. 19. The annual Third Saturday in October game
against Tennessee actually is on the fourth Saturday in 2013 with the Vols coming to town on Oct. 26. A renewal of one of the countrys most
fierce rivalries is on tap for Nov. 9, following a bye week, as the Tide will welcome the LSU Tigers to Bryant-Denny Stadium. A trip to Starkville,
Miss., to face Mississippi State (Nov. 16) will be followed by a non-conference game against Chattanooga on Nov. 23. The Iron Bowl vs. Auburn
is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 30, at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn.

Alabamas offensive backfield must replace yet another running back who made an early departure to the NFL and three starters from one of
the best offensive lines in school history, but record-setting Crimson Tide quarterback AJ McCarron returns for his senior season with a plethoraof weapons at his disposal. McCarron won the quarterback job in 2011 and developed his game and confidence throughout the past two seasons,
culminating with his offensive MVP performance in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game. He followed with a 30-touchdown, three-
interception season and another BCS national championship. McCarron led the nation in quarterback efficiency in 2012 with a 175.28 rating and
enters the 2013 season with 25-2 career record.
Alabama returns 95 percent of its production from its wide receiving corps in 2013, headlined by sophomore Amari Cooper, who earned
Freshman All-America honors and set Tide freshman records with 59 receptions for 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Tide also boasts
returning starters Kevin Norwood and Christion Jones along with veteran speedsters Kenny Bell and junior DeAndrew White, who are both
coming off injuries. Departures include Michael Williams and Kelly Johnson at tight end and h-back, but Brian Vogler and Harrison Jones return
along with Malcolm Faciane, Kurt Freitag and incoming freshman O.J. Howard.
With Eddie Lacy gone at running back, Alabama will look to sophomore T.J. Yeldon, who rushed for a freshman-record 1,108 yards and 12
touchdowns in 2012. Yeldon averaged 6.3 yards per carry and caught 11 passes for 131 yards and one score. Joining Yeldon is junior Jalston Fowler
and sophomore Dee Hart, both coming off knee injuries, and sophomore Kenyan Drake. True freshmen Derrick Henry, Altee Tenpenny, Alvin
Kamara and Tyren Jones provide the Tide immense talent and excellent depth at the position. The offensive line lost three All-Americans (all NFL draft picks) but returns plenty of talent in junior Cyrus Kouandjio and senior Anthony
Steen, who have started a combined 39 games at the Capstone. Both Kouandjio and Steen could contend for postseason honors. Sophomore
Ryan Kelly appears to have the inside track on the starting job at center while Arie Kouandjio, Kellen Williams and Chad Lindsay are battling at
left guard and Austin Shepherd and Leon Brown are fighting for the spot at right tackle. Alabama also boasts a bevy of talented linemen who will
battle for roles along the front, most notably Brandon Greene, Isaac Luatua, Alphonse Taylor and several others.

The Alabama defense proved to be one of the best in college football history in 2011, led the nation in three categories again in 2012, and returns seven
starters in 2013. Alabama will have to replace NFL departures in cornerback Dee Milliner (first round, No. 9 overall to the Jets), defensive ends Jesse Williams
(fifth round to the Seahawks), Damion Square (Eagles) and safety Robert Lester (Panthers). The Crimson Tides seven returning starters on defense boast 94
combined career starts and played an integral role on a defense that has allowed an average of 9.1 points per game over the past two seasons. The Tide willhave at least one returning starter on each level of the defense, with Ed Stinson anchoring the line of scrimmage while C.J. Mosley, Adrian Hubbard and Trey
DePriest direct the linebackers. The returning secondary includes cornerback Deion Belue and safeties Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Vinnie Sunseri.
Mosely, a Butkus Award finalist from a season ago, is the veteran leader of the entire defense. His 107 tackles in 2012 led the team and were the most by a
Crimson Tide defender since 2003. Mosley is one of the best coverage linebackers in college football and has developed into a run-stopping force in the middle.
He is joined by Hubbard and DePriest at linebacker along with Xzavier Dickson, who started six games at jack linebacker a season ago but has worked at both
defensive end and linebacker. Denzel Devall emerged as a pass-rushing threat as 2012 progressed and continued that improvement in the offseason, while fellow
sophomore Reggie Ragland has made strides in his development at inside linebacker. Tana Patrick is a veteran who is looking for his opportunity as a senior
while Ryan Anderson and Dillon Lee are underclassmen with tremendous potential.
The Alabama secondary once again must overcome the loss of a first round draft pick as Milliner became the fifth Crimson Tide defensive back drafted
in the first two rounds over the past five years. Clinton-Dix led Alabama withfive interceptions in 2012, including one in each of the final three contests while
Sunseri started eight games at safety and nickel back and had 54 tackles. Belue returns for his second season as a starter at cornerback while senior John Fulton
and sophomore Geno Smith look to step into the spot vacated by Milliner. Smith emerged late in his freshman season as the Tides third cornerback. The safety
position is loaded with talent as sophomore Landon Collins joins senior Nick Perry and junior Jarrick Williams in a battle for a spot at safety along with work
in the Tides complex substitution packages. Several young cornerbacks, including Bradley Sylve and Jabriel Washington, will battle for time along with some
talented incoming freshmen.
The defensive front will be occupied by Stinson, who boasts 36 career games played and 16 starts, and several talented youngsters fighting for playing time.
Jeoffrey Pagan saw significant action in 2012 and could push for the starting job at end opposite Stinson. Junior Brandon Ivory and sophomore Darren Lake
project to fill the role of the departed Williams. LaMichael Fanning and Davlin Tomlinson have made strides along the defensive front. Both players figure to
push for an expanded role in the Crimson Tide defensive line rotation. Korren Kirven and Dakota Ball are coming off redshirt seasons and will look to add
depth along with Wilson Love and Anthony Orr.
