The specia internaona make-up of the
GPE student body (composed of students
from more than 20 dierent countries and
5 connents) that aends GPE eery year
is the hamark of the program. This kind
of specia mix of students is rarey found in
comparabe programs. In courses designed
to orient them toward working in the goba
iage, students earn from each other ona daiy basis how to deeop ideas, come
up with common souons, and impement
them. In this way, their educaona training
prepares them for intercutura teamwork
with a changing mix of team members to
dea with tasks under the tuteage of expe-
rienced instructors.
Seera ectures with an internaona per-
spece are aaiabe, such as Goba SuppyChain Management, Goba Producon
Management, Internaona Procurement
and Technoogy Transfer. In addion, courses
are oered in which GPE students carry out
industria and research projects with stu-
dents from Korea, the USA, Brazi, and South
Africa Students take up the atest research
deeopments. They open up new appica-
on areas for technoogies or deducey
anayze probems from industry on their way
to deeoping souons.
The TU Berin infrastructure surrounding the
GPE is sharpy dened by the Producon
Technoogy Center (PTC), which consists of
departments from the TU Berin and the
Fraunhofer Society. The PTC coaborates
intensively with partners in research and
in educaon from around the word. Its
network of partners consists of roughy
200 businesses, research faciies, and uni-
ersies wordwide. These partners jointy
seek out engineering projects and scienc
business quesons from the producon
technica enironment.
The internaona aor of the student body
and assistant professors pays a key roe in
the educaona process. Eery year, ising
professors gie ectures for GPE; in recent
years these hae incuded professors fromthe Uniersity of Michigan, USA; the Uni-
ersity of New South Waes, Austraia; the
Korean Instute of Science and Technoogy,
Korea; the Uniersity of Cincinna, USA; the
Rochester Instute of Technoogy, USA; the

Our GPE graduates go on to assume eading
posions as technoogy managers, funcon-
ing successfuy in internaona aue-added
chains. The quaicaons they acquire are
directy taken from the job descripons oftechnoogy managers in the goba business
enironment. Internaona cooperaon
between businesses demands engineers with
the abiity to cooperate and communicate
gobay. Science, research, and goba indus-
tria pracces require that GPE graduates
master the foowing skis:
The abiity to understand, assess, and appy
scienc, natura science, and technicainterconnecons when deeoping, main-
taining, and improing construcon and
manufacturing products and processes. The
abiity to recognize and assess interreaon-
ships between the economy, technoogy, the
enironment, and society. The abiity to work
independently and responsibly in intercultu-
ra mudiscipinary projects. The abiity to
place what they have learned in the contextof economicay, sociay, and cuturay die-
rent regions and to appy it there.
The GPE curricuum was designed with these
requirements in mind, and has proen itsef
in the career experiences of GPE graduates.
In addion, opportunies for interdiscipinary
cooperaon are enhanced by the research
faciies inoed in the program or through
interdiscipinary research projects. Theseresearch faciies incude the Fraunhofer soci-

Akademischer Austauschdienst), we hit on
the idea of encouraging more non-European
students to study in Germany. Our instuon
is very well suited to that, since we have a
pethora of accessory resources and oer
a rst-cass and internaonay recognized
engineering educaon. We hae made great
strides and hae around 1,000 appicants an-nuay, of which we are abe to accept about
70 who meet a the requirements and bring

What are some specics you would empha-size in the organizaon of this curriculum?
Eery year, we conduct a thorough surey of
our students at every level so we can get into
what changes are wanted in a the eds and
thus connue to improe. Furthermore, we
are redoubing our project-oriented eorts

we now have access to a considerable collabo-

Informaon technoogy has gien us access

to the mode of transfer, where the instructor

that an intensied project orientaon has to
occur that we can focus on a of our academic

they were probem-soing, engineers mainy

The uniersity has been home to many
renowned sciensts. Three-coor photogra-
phy and rotograure prinng were deeoped
here. Research into motor ehice design,
radioteegraphy, machine kinemacs and
early television techniques provided the
basis for a number of modern technoogies.
Georg Schesingers pioneering research into
the interacon of machine too design and
factory management contributed to the dee-
opment of ergonomics and biomedica tech-
noogy. Ernst Ruska, who ater won the Nobe
Prize, buit the rst eectron microscope at
the Technica Coege of Berin. Konrad Zuse
constructed the rst freey programmabe
cacuang machine, a precursor of modern
computers, out of spare parts.
The Center unites the Instute for Machine
Toos and Factory Management and the
Fraunhofer Instute for Producon Systemsand Design Technoogy under one roof.
The main thrust of the current reforms at
TU Berin has been to improe teaching and
study condions. The changes are goerned
by the Guideines for Further Deeopment
of Study Programs adopted by TU Berins
Academic Senate in February of 2000. One
of the goas of the measures has been to
reduce study mes in order to increase the
araceness and compeeness of the
uniersity degrees on the abor market.
Another important goa is to enhance the
internaona quaity of the educaon oered
at TU Berin. For this reason, a growing
number of internaona studies programs
eading to bacheor and master degrees are
being estabished. Moduar course systems
are being introduced to aow more exibe
studies. This makes it easier to take part in in-
ternaona exchange programs, increases the
freedom of choice regarding courses within
the facues, and encourages interdiscipi-
nary studies. According to the guideines, TU
students are expected to devote 15 percent
of their studies to discipines outside theirown eds.
The new budgeng system oers nancia
rewards for improing study condions in the
indiidua facues.

The ast majority of courses are taught by
professors from TU Berin and decision-
makers from eading German companies.
Thanks to its moduarity, the structure of
the teaching program aows a ariety of
content choices. The course program makes
a conscious break from the one-dimensi-ona approach to business management,
the Master of Business Administraon,
and instead combines entrepreneuria
and management-oriented content with
approed engineering educaon. Students
gain hands-on experience about global wor-
king cutures in teams made up of mixed
naonaies, such as Braziian, Chinese,
Indian, Thai, and Turkish cizens. The gene-
ra features of the curricuum derie fromthe ariety of modues oered within the
foowing modue groups:

E Special Prole
The modue group Specia Proe has op-
ons for sef-designing a program. Courses
are inserted in the curricuum here with an
actua reference to teachers from industry.
Pracce-oriented bock courses are oered,
such as lean Producon and Design For
Six Sigma, on topics inoing businessorganizaon. Howeer, there is aso room
for project-oriented courses in this modue
group, such as Energy Entrepreneurship &
Rura Eectricaon where, for exampe,
energy suppy concepts for deeoping
countries are worked out. Students must
take at east one course out of each modue
group. A the other courses can be chosen
out of any modue group, compeng a tota
of 90 ECTS. The moduarizaon of the cur-ricuum gies the students the opportuniy
to buid their own curricuum according
to their interests or career perspeces.
Understanding gained from internaona
aue-added chains in internaona part-

capabiies with technica comprehension.
This use of intercutura knowedge to per-
form professiona acies as an engineer
is a great adantage in the broad ed of the

The GPE major in Manufacturing is designed
for engineers from producon operaons
who want to learn new technologies and
master management methods within the
scope of their Master Degree training. Most
of the students aready hae professiona
experience. They hae worked in businesses
in the aircra industry, aeronaucs, or the
electrical engineering industry, but also in
competey dierent areas of aue creaon
as panners and designers. A GPE educaon
is designed to give students the capability to
take on acies in producon rms deman-
ding a high degree of responsibiity.
The training contents are oriented toward
the state of the research and the require-
ments of professiona pracce. The theory
of exibe, adaptabe, and irtua factories is
a major educaona focus. Producon pan-ning and contro, process-oriented factory
ayout, CaX programs and irtua design are
a part of the mix. Designing goba suppy
chains and factory management are key in
the area of economics. IT toos for panning
and designing products and processes are
introduced, and students learn how to pro-
gram and use them. The curricuum incudes
courses on how to work with enterprise
resource panning soware, such as SAP
programs, computer-aided design programs
such as Soid Edge or ProEngineer, and pan-
ning toos for modeing producon faciies
such as EM-Pant and AutoMod, and ogiscs
chains such as AIMMS. Students may work
as student interns in businesses based in
the Beriner economy, such as Siemens or
Bombardier, as we as in the Instutes of
the Producon Technoogy Center.
Aer compeng their studies, graduates
work as producon panners and quaity

inTernshiPsAn internship asng at east 9 weeks in
a European company gies students the
perfect opportunity to earn about new work
enironments. They come into contact with
new working cutures, other technoogies,
branches, and organizaona structures.
Excuding their own cutura area, students
may choose the country where they wish
to compete this internship. Students canchoose between rather appicaon-oriented
industry acies or research-oriented aci-
es, depending on their interests. Mechanica
engineering and eectrica engineering com-
panies in parcuar oen request taented
GPE students to sere as interns.
GPE pubishes an admissions cataogue isng
the curricua itae of incoming students as
a way of heping to aderse its students
capabiies in soing probems in business
enironments. This cataogue introduces our
highy prepared GPE students to companiesand research faciies. This cataogue aso
heps many GPE students get in touch with
companies and nd a suitabe internship or
topic of interest for their Master Thesis.42

Extracurricuar acies form another strong
part of the program. This is where student
earning goes beyond the boundaries of the
uniersity. Acies incude geng to know
businesses, people, and art and culture
as we. Exchanges with Germans, such as
ising the Phiharmonic, theaters, and
museums, take pace reguary. The Hanoer
Fair, the internaona Conneccum job
fair in Berin, and isits to businesses such as
Daimer Chryser AG, Robert Bosch GmbH,
vokswagen AG, Siemens AG, E.on AG, Ener-
con AG or aeo and intersoar are a part of
the program oered eery year.
Each semester, GPE students reguary come
together at eents such as the Christmas and
End-of-Semester Party, the vabene Party, and
aumni eents as we. In addion, students
hae access to a day room at the Producon
Technica Center, where they can organize
birthday pares, socia eenings, or other
eents on their own iniae.
MasTer Thesis
Studying producon engineering in Germany
is considered to be a high aue competence
in the goba word of producon. The deep
es that the departments of Machine Toos
and Factory Management (IWF) has with the
Fraunhofer Instute for Producon Systems
and Design Technoogy (IPK) and industries
outside the uniersity area create a frame-work that augments the incenes to study
the GPE program een further.
The Master Thesis is the nishing touch on
the study program. This is where students
demonstrate how they can appy what they
hae earned. Furthermore, it enabes the
student to deeop deeper knowedge,
understanding and capabiies in research in
the ed of the students speciaizaon. Stu-
dents can choose between industry-oriented
topic and a uniersity topic. And in coa-
boraon with an adisor, students anayze
a probem and deeop souons buiding
on that knowedge. Students hae three
months to compete the scienc work ontheir task. At the end of that me, the stu-
dent presents its results to the sponsoring
instute and possiby the company as we.
Master theses by GPE students frequenty
receie awards from industry and research.
They hae oen sered as springboards for
students into a career in goba companies
or research faciies.

Friendships made between students are
oen ifeong. Een in cases where career
paths ater scaer students across the gobe,
most remain fast friends. The GPE informa-
on system wi hep you keep in touch and
buid up networks with aumni from other
casses. Pubicaons ike the TU Internao-
na keep aumni informed of current eents
at the Technica Uniersity. Eents such asthe graduaon ceremony with its ceremoni-
a presentaon of dipomas, the Christmas
Party, and our annua aumni ceebraon are
opportunies for the aumni to reunite and
come together with younger students, the
facuty, their uniersity and a the memories
they hae had from Berin.
The degree you earn during your studies
wi open doors for you to technoogy-orien-
ted enterprises and organizaons and wi
quaify you to found your own business. Our
graduates can be found in sma and medi-
um-sized companies as we as major corpo-
raons ike Genera Motors or Airbus. The
majority of GPE graduates return to their
home country to pursue their careers, whie
many others remain with companies in Ger-
many for a few more years - and some stay
on permanenty. Aumni oen te GPE that
their highy deeoped abiity to communi-cate across cultures and cooperate in glo-
bay interacng suppy chains is of immense
aue to them. But its not just industry that
aracts GPE graduates - science-oriented
students oen nd jobs at uniersies and
research faciies. Persona interiews con-
rm that graduates with degrees from GPE
more than meet the demands of the abor
market. Saaries of GPE graduates in the rst
three years aer graduaon are signicanty
greater than their salaries earned as holders
of bacheors degrees.
