Amazing Items Made with 3D Printers : This video is about the printing procedure and the application(For example: Medcine, Industry) of 3D printing.

MIND MAP

3D PRINTING(BACKGROUND)•3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing.

•One of many various processes used to

synthesize a 3D object.•A 3D printer is a type of industrial robot.

3D PRINTER COMPONENTS The Frame

A frame to hold the machine together. The system that moves the head can be the frame or part of the frame. Head movement mechanics The head must be able to move relative to the bed in all three spatial directions, typically X, Y and Z. It does not matter if the head or the bed moves. If the bed moves, though, the frame needs to be double the width/length. Motors Motors are needed, four at least – three for the spatial movement, and one for the extruder. A major design choice is if they are “ordinary” DC or “stepper”.

The printer head/extruder The “print head” (typically) extrudes the warm plastic.

ElectronicsThere will be “computer” or “controller” that controls the whole printing process. Electronics component = controller itself + the electronics converting the controllers. Lastly, power supplies for all.

FirmwareThe Arduino has a highlevel compiler running on the pc, which generates the code that then runs on the controller.

3D SoftwareNot part of the printer, but the printer is useless without a companion pc with software that can:

● create/manipulate 3D models, view on a pc.

● convert these models into “slices” for the 3D-printer In some cases

to automatically cope with making “support” for overhangs.

● convert slices into motion commands that give good edges and fill

areas.

ONLINE SURVEY

SURVEY RESULT We found that……………………...1. Most of the respondents heard ‘3d printing’ before

(90.6%), half of them heard it from TV programmes. (50%)2. Almost half of them said that they had never tried to use

3d printer (43.3%), and most of the users said it was hard to handle it (82.3%).

3. Nearly half of them said that they would like to purchase one (46.9%), while 50% of them had no intention to buy one. Only very few of them already owned one. (3.1%)

SURVEY RESULT1. Most of them will consider the financial aspect first when they

are choosing a 3d printer.2. Only one respondent is willing to spend over $6000 to buy a 3d

printer.3. Half of them thought that the price of 3d printer now is

affordable while half of them didn't think so. (50%)4. Almost half of them usually use their printers for designing.

(40.6%)5. Most of them would like to apply training courses for 3d

printing. (63.6%)

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT1. Aircraft Wings

a recent technique developed by BAE Systems involves making stronger metal parts by striking them repeatedly using ultrasonic tool as each layer gets printed.

2. Complex Engine Parts

Recently, Autodesk and Stratasys collaborated to develop a full scale model of the turbo-prop engine using 3D printing, demonstrating the future capabilities of 3D printing for developing jet engine parts.

3. Unmanned Aerial SystemsWhile this concept is still on the drawing board, BAE Systems has already invested ₤117m in research and development to ensure that these concepts can be turned into a reality.

4. 3D Printing as a Service (3DPaaS)With open source design development, there will be a possibility to integrate multiple ideas from the outside, thereby reducing the build time considerably and also minimizing costs.

5. On-Demand Parts in Space

In collaboration with NASA, Made in Space is conducting zero gravity tests to experiment 3D printing on the International Space Station, which would allow astronauts to print tools and parts when required.

CONCLUSION The 3d printing technology is gaining currency now as the price is lower compared to the price when it was introduced. Therefore, it is becoming affordable in the eyes of the general public . It is discernible that the 3d printing technology will become a necessity since it takes a salient role on different areas in our daily life. It is an important innovation for the further development on medicine and industry. In Hong Kong, more training courses should be provided for the people who are interested in as guideline is needed for them, people need to know more about its information and also operation procedure.

Thank you!
