Book: Change the Culture, Change the Game by Roger Connors and Tom Smith

When teams or organizations are underperforming leaders tend to make the mistake of working on the top half of the pyramid by focusing on “actions”

Leaders can accelerate change and results by working with the bottom half of the pyramid when they focus on “beliefs” and “experiences.”

As LEADers, I want you to think of yourselves as…

Step 1: What belief will support the desired action and therefore result?

Step 2: What experience will create the belief?

STARTHERE! Then…

Try to Avoid this!

Leadership of Self

The leader is respected for her or his own teaching and learning

Leadership of Others

The leader is respected for her or his interpersonal skills and commitment to leading transformation among teams of teachers, administrators, and colleagues.

Leadership of Community

This leader is respected for her or his influence and engagement with an expanded community of educational stakeholders

Leadership and Results Pyramid

Focus on Leadership of Self and Others

The leaders is respectedfor his or her own teachingand learning

The leader is respected for her or his interpersonal skills and commitment to leading transformation among teams of teachers, administrators, and colleagues.

Pyramid Puzzle

You will receive blue papers to paste and build your “pyramid”

Cut out all the different strips (beliefs, experiences, actions, and results)

Connect and align all the 1s, 2s, 3s. Ect. and paste your “pyramid” on a white sheet of paper

Experience

Belief

Action

1

The leader is respected for her or his teaching and learning

Start building your pyramid with the belief first

Pyramid Puzzle You are building a “system of beliefs”

that together create the result

Study your pyramids. What other beliefs can you create that will produce your results? Write experiences and actions that align with the belief.

Which 3 would be more strategic for you to focus on this year?

What else do you notice?

Leadership of Self

What do you notice about the current “system of beliefs?” How can you improve upon them?

Add 3 - 4 more beliefs and align the belief with experience and action

Get together with another pair and share your additions. What do you notice? Themes? Insights? Questions? Comments?

Which belief(s) would best serve your school?

Leadership of Others

The leader is respected for her or his interpersonal skills and commitment to leading transformation among teams of teachers, administrators, and colleagues.

What “system of beliefs” will create leadership of others?

Identify at least 4 beliefs and write corresponding experiences and actions.

Leadership of Others Compare your result pyramids with

another group. What do you notice? Insights? Questions? Comments?

Go to the LEAD home page and download the example result pyramids. How are your pyramids similar or different?

What belief(s) would best serve your school?

Enrollment Conversations

In Summary

Consider that you are “Designers of Experience”

As Designers of Experience aligning experience, beliefs, and actions will accelerate achieving your desired result

Be strategic about who you enroll and why as you expand LEAD partners

Have FUN!
