565FLINTLOCK SHOTGUN OF HISTORICAL INTEREST.Marked for J.B. Baucheron (w. 1823-1826), Paris. Damascusdouble barrels with a curly walnut stock. Inlaid brass maker’smark on barrels and engraved hunting scenes on both locks, lockplates, hammers, and trigger guard; crowned “N” inlaid in brass on the barrels and in silver on the stock. Minor imperfections. 47 1/4”l. Ex Hammer Galleries (New York); ex H.S. Barton (Kentucky).
Baucheron began his work in Paris in 1822 with Louis MarinGosset prior to working alone between 1823 and 1826. Gosset had, from 1793 until 1813, worked in the shop ofNicholas Boutet, crown armorer to Napoleon I.
The crowned “N” on the barrel and on the stock indicate thatthis shotgun was made for the House of Bonaparte. When sold by Hammer Galleries, the present gun was associatedwith Napoleon I, however given the date of manufacture(1823-1826), it seems more plausible that it was made forFranz, Napoleon’s son with his second wife, Maria Louise.Despite living his entire life in Austria, young Franz wascrowned emperor as Napoleon II in 1815, but his fictionalreign lasted a mere fifteen days. He died of tuberculosis in1832. $5,000-$8,000

Garth’s Auctions, Inc. guarantees the authenticity of origin as stated in the first bold line of the catalogue description, with the exception of amendments by any oral or written notices or announcements at the time of the auction. “Origin” is defined as the creator, period, culture,or source, as set forth in the first bold line of a lot in the catalog. Exclusions – Notwithstanding any other provision of these Terms of Guarantee, Garth’sAuctions, Inc. does not guarantee the names or patterns of any Oriental rugs. All rug dimensions are approximate. Regarding coloredstones: purchasers are reminded that colored stones and diamonds may be enhanced by using one or more techniques, including but not limited to: clarity enhancements, resins, and heat treatment. Garth’s makes no warranty express or implied to the buyer as to whether a natural stone has been enhanced. Additionally, antiques, by the very nature of their age, have wear that reflects their years of use. As a result, honest wear earned from use is to be expected and is sometimes the proof that an item is an antique. Normal wear will not be listed. Buyers who would like to know the fine points regarding condition should call prior to the auction. We would prefer that you examine the items before you place a bid. All other guarantees of authenticity of authorship, expressed or implied, are hereby disclaimed. There is no other warranty, express or implied. Each and every lot is sold “as is”.

If it is determined to Garth’s Auctions, Inc.’s satisfaction that the first bold line is incorrect, the sale will be rescindedprovided the lot is returned to Garth’s Auctions, Inc. in the same condition in which it was at the time of the auction. It is also Garth’s Auctions, Inc.’s policy to have the purchaser obtain, at the purchaser’s expense, the opinion of one (or two in some cases) recognized experts in the field, mutually acceptable to Garth’s Auctions, Inc. and the purchaser, before Garth’s Auctions, Inc. determines whether to rescind the sale under the above guarantee. The purchaser’s sole remedy in the event of disputed authenticity of origin of any lot shall be the rescission of the sale and return of the original purchaseprice and premium paid by the purchaser. Garth’s Auctions, Inc. accepts no liability of any kind for an item after the gavel has fallen.

ESTIMATES & RESERVES: Presale estimates are intended as guides and may not be reflective of actual gavel price. Some of the items in this auction are subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Garth’s Auctions, Inc. The reserve will not be higher than the low estimate.

Not many people can declare they held a job for nearly five decades, but the family ofrenowned Kennedy photographer, the late Robert Davidoff, can say with pride that Davidoffwas the photographer “in residence” for the Kennedy family in Palm Beach for almost 50years. Davidoff’s family waited until four years after his death to release a book, The KennedyFamily Album, in September 2008. Now, Babe Davidoff, widow of the photographer, haschosen, for the sale of the original photography used to create the book plus additional images not included in the publication and heretofore unseen by the general public, an auction house similarly dedicated to its own customers for over five decades. Garth’s Auctions is proud to announce that in the fall of 2009, it will present over 200 photographswhich captured three generations of the Kennedy family while at the “Winter White House”during President John F. Kennedy’s administration through the eventual sale of the Palm Beachhome.
A freelance photographer, Davidoff first photographed then President-elect John F. Kennedyalong side President Herbert Hoover and Ambassador Joseph Kennedy during a party forHoover in Palm Beach. However, it wasn’t until Davidoff later met Rose Kennedy that hewas invited by the matriarch to become a true family intimate capturing photos destined tobe part of the families’ personal archives.
Garth’s will also feature other presidential material of note in this landmark sale with moreinformation to follow in the coming months.
