A MESSAGE FROM THE FRIENDS & HICOM TRUSTEES Welcome to a special community newsletter from Friends of Histon & Impington Recreation and Histon & Impington Community (aka HICOM) featuring the Village Wellbeing Week (4-13 May) and information on the Friends 2019 events and activities plus village sports club info.
HICOM and the Friends of the Rec have worked closely together on organising the Wellbeing Week which has over 20 events and focuses on the social, mental, physical and spiritual sides of wellbeing.
Indeed, the objectives of the Friends of the Rec and HICOM interlink and are complementary supporting sport, wellbeing, recreation and mobility in our community.
This close working relationship between the two charities has existed for a number of years, primarily through the HI Rec Monday Club providing different exercise activities for over 40 older residents every week. It will be further developed in the Spring with the start of the Rec Sunshine Sports & Activity Club, a unique, fully accessible and inclusive sports and activities club for adults including provision for those living with memory loss and not normally able to join a sports club, and their carers.
Last Spring the Friends of the Rec set up HI Community Athletics providing separate weekly sessions for 8-11s and 11 upwards. Up to 35 now attend weekly and there are still places avail-able.
Last year the objectives of the Friends of the Rec were updated to widen its geographical area of support from just the Rec to the entire two villages so that the Friends could support a po-tential Community Park at Milton Road.
Provision of a skatepark at the community park is an aspiration and to help find out if there is the demand amongst children and young people the Friends have organised a skatepark event at Orchard Park on Mayday Monday providing free lessons.
The new Village Community Trishaw arrives in April following a successful fundraising effort and this will provide rides for older residents with volunteer riders.
Full information on both charities available at www.hicom.org.uk and www.hirecfriends.org.uk
New volunteers are always needed- please do consider becoming involved.
Our thanks to Chris Cox for his help in producing this newsletter.

ing of residents of all ages in the villages of Histon and Impington and neighbouring commu-nities.

Welcome to the Wellbeing Week. The Village Wellbeing Week is a new idea and seeks to bring village residents of all ages to-gether with a number of different events to help find new ways to improve their wellbeing, find new activities to participate in and so help prevent problems that could manifest later.
This week builds on the previous two mental wellbeing weeks but expands the scope to a more general themed village wellbeing week, with a broad range of different activities that should appeal to everyone in the community.
There are different dimensions to wellbeing and this week will feature lots of activities that will help us to improve different aspects of our wellbeing. Note the programme was correct when this was printed, but for the latest updates see the website hiwellbeing.org.uk
The Wellbeing Week will also see the launch of three new initiatives;
Village Trishaw offering less able or isolated folk the opportunity to go for gentle rides.
Worry Tree Café bringing support, friendship and advice to those experiencing loneli-ness, isolation and challenges to their wellbeing, and their carers.
Rec Sunshine Sports & Activity Club providing a unique fully accessible and inclusive sports and activities club for adults including provision for those living with memory loss and their carers not normally able to join a sports club. This starts Thursday 2nd May.
Physical
Probably the best understood of the different aspects of wellbeing. Being as fit as possible, within any physical con-straints, will make a difference to our overall wellbeing.
Spiritual
Helping to understand our place in the universe and our relationship with the divine.
Social
Our wellbeing is greatly influenced by the way we connect socially. Loneliness is one of the great problems of our age and we will have lots of opportunities to make meaningful connections with others in our Community and join in with a wide range of different activities.
Mental
There are lots of ways of improving our mental wellbeing, which inter-acts with the social, physical and spiritual. We are concentrating on particular activities cen-tred on mindfulness and also nutrition.

Histon & Impington Bicycle Club H&I Bicycle Club has quickly become established as the local club for people who love cycling. Regular road rides include Sunday morning club runs, organised by speed and distance, meeting at the pump at 8:30am and heading out for 40–60 miles. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings in summer we run a chaingang and paceline; on Mondays in winter indoor training at ISC; and on Wednesdays in winter a fast tempo ride. We also run monthly cafe rides of 60-80 miles, and in spring a series of taster rides for people who would like to start riding with the club.
As in previous years, HIBC will join with Friends of the Rec to host the Strawberry 50 - a large, all inclusive cycling event on September 1st offering routes for all.
For more information and up-to-date details of our rides see histonimpingtonbicycleclub.org.uk and facebook.com/groups/histonimpingtonbicycleclub
Histon Cricket Club Histon Cricket Club fosters the enjoyment of the spirit of cricket in the villages. The club has Clubmark status and the Recreation Ground (where we play all our home games) has two excellent pitches.
We are proud of our development of junior players (colts) and can offer qualified county coaches, regular training and age group competitive cricket. Our senior teams often include many junior players who find - by playing alongside adults – that they are developed both socially and in their cricket. Colts should contact the Director of Coaching Joe Uttridge on 07771 787695 or ju4@hotmail.co.uk
This year Histon will also be running three senior sides and a midweek (development) team. Adult training will be on Thursdays 6-8pm starting after Easter. Adults should contact Steve Campin (Overall Club Cricket Captain) on 07951 462347.
We are always seeking new members for our U9, U11, U13 U14 & U15 teams. Please see our website for confirmed timings for junior practice sessions. We will also be running the hugely popular All Stars Cricket Programme again this year. Sessions are likely to risks place on Sunday mornings. Confirmation of this can again be found on our website histoncc.play-cricket.com, Twitter or Facebook.

It plays all its home matches at the Recreation Ground, and would currently welcome players between 35 and 45 who have played in the past to a reasonable local standard. Histon & Impington Croquet Club Croquet is a fascinating and challenging game that requires skill and tactics rather than strength, and so can be played by men, women, young and old of all abilities – but most of all it is great fun! We play social games suitable for all standards. So do come along to try the game with the Histon and Impington Croquet Club who play on the Recreation Ground and are always keen to welcome new mem-bers. The croquet season starts in April and extends through the year until September. We play club ses-sions on most afternoons, weather permitting. We have 2 croquet lawns available for members to play at any time from 11am every day, and the club provides all the equipment needed allowing up to 16 people to play at a time. We play Mix’n’Match social games on the last Sunday of the month, with a bring and share meal under the shade of the maple trees – marvellous.
Please see out website for more details at www.hicroquet.wordpress.com or email us at HICroquetClub@gmail.com or phone/text Duncan on 07857 600832
Histon & Impington Runners Histon and Impington Runners (HI RUNNERS) was established April 2014 when the Friends of the Rec teamed up with Neil Marsh Health and Fitness to form a non profit based running club for the local community. The running club welcomes all runners of any ability, male or female, to join them just for fun, to improve performance or to make running social.
The running club saw 50 members join in its first 6 months and has gone from strength to strength since, seeing people improve their running ability and also making running fun and enjoyable. The Club now stand alone and are affiliated to UK Athletics.
HI RUNNERS is a community running club for new and existing runners who would like to train and run with others in a fun and social group. It is a non-elitist club with all members making everyone feel welcome. HI RUNNERS meet on a Wednesday evening with a winter and summer schedule. The club also attends running events together from 5K up to marathon distances.
