freedgeGIVE. TAKE. SHARE.
A sharing mechanism aiming to reduce food waste and build a stronger community.
In industrialized countries, between 30 and 40% of food production is wasted. More than 40% of this waste occurs at the retail or the
consumer level.
Waste
Global Food Production
These losses cause unnecessaryoverproduction and demandmore crop land than we reallyneed.
At the same time, about onebillion people on Earth cannot getenough to eat.
What is freedge?
We promote the installation of community fridges [public refrigerators] that are used to share food and ideas at the neighborhood level.

Freedge Yourself!
Freedge Yourself
Involve your community
Involve the neighbors in the process and find a host for the freedge. Choosing the right location is not always
easy.
Freedge Yourself
Mind the Law
Be aware of legal requirements regarding food sharing in your city or county, and post the rules clearly and
visibly on the freedge. Challenge ahead: There are many layers
of legislation and it’s hard to navigate them. Most food codes are made for retail activities and therefore are not adapted to food sharing. Maybe your
best bet is talking to local health authorities directly.
Freedge Yourself
Find your fridge
Locate a used commercial fridge with glass doors (for
maximum visibility)
Freedge Yourself
Make it beautifulMake the freedge beautiful
and attractive to the neighborhood. Invite artists and neighbors to participate in the freedge painting and
transform it in an evolving art installation. Install a
community board on the freedge, a place where
neighbors can communicate and express themselves.
Freedge Yourself
Spread the word
Find a name for your freedge and your local movement. Spread the word in your community and on social media. Put yourself in the
freedge map.
Freedge Yourself
Create connections
Make partnerships with farmers markets, restaurants,
grocery stores and other businesses and organizations
that might help stock the freedge and take care of it.
Freedge Yourself
Keep it safeKeep the freedge clean and safe. Freedge hosts perform regular safety checks on the fridge and regular cleanings. Each freedge should have a
message board with the contact information of the host, so that freedge users
can notify hosts of undesired items.
