Flower Care and Handling

Getting Home Safe

• Flowers can stay out of water for an hour or so

• For every hour out of water cut 1 inch off of the stem at home

• 35° is the ideal temperature for flowers out of water

• Do not leave in a car below 35 or above 70 degrees

• Protect flowers from the wind when walking from shops to your car

Caring for flowers at home• Thoroughly wash your container with

chlorine based bleach.

• Fill Clean container with clean room temperature water 100-104° F

• Flower foods contain Biocide to prevent the growth of bacteria in your vase thereby extending the life of your flowers

• Mix flower food according to directions on the package. Not more or less.

• Strip flower stems so that no foliage will be submerged under the water

• Re cut your stems with clippers, sharp scissors, or a knife on an angle

• Immediately place flower into water

• Change water often and re-cut stems

Martha’s Flower Food RecipeExtend the life of flower arrangements using this simple mixture of ingredients found around the house.

Tools and Materials1 gallon water2 cups corn syrup4 teaspoons bleach4 teaspoons white vinegarJug for mixing

Flower Food How-To1. In jug, combine water, corn syrup, bleach, and white vinegar. Gently mix. Use 1/4 cup per vase of flowers.

Commercial Flower Food

• SUGAR provides nourishment for the cut flowers• BIOCIDE which inhibits the growth of fungi and bacteria• ACIDIFER which lowers the pH of the water.

Floral Foam Basics

Cut your foam block down to the right size for your container

Soak your foam in a bucket or large container

Place foam in your vase or container and secure with tape if needed

Cut Stems on an angle and strip off foliage

Leave about 1” of clean stem to be inserted in foam

Insert the stem into the foam

If you decide you do not like the placement of that stemTake it out and re cutDo not insert into the same hole make a new hole

Begin by adding foliage to cover your foam as much as you can

Secondly add filler to cover the remaining foam that is peeking through

Turn your arrangement and look for “holes” fill them

Finally add your feature flowers to the bed of foliage and filler TA DA!!

Your Turn To Design

• One white recreations container• One pre soaked brick of foam• 3 feature flowers• 3 filler flowers• a hand full of foliage (5-8 stems ideally)• Please share clippers with table
