    Make a Match For this small-group game, label pairs of flame cutouts with matching letters. Scatter the flames facedown. To play, a student turns over two flames. If the letters match, youngsters pretend to spray the flames with water; then the student who flipped the flames sets them aside. If the letters do not match, he turns the flames back over. Play continues, in turn, until there are no flames left. Matching letters

    Call 9-1-1! In your water table, float craft foam flames labeled as shown. Display near the table a sign that says “9-1-1.” Provide a spray bottle filled with water. A child pretends the flames are real and calls out, “I see flames; call 9-1-1!” squirting the matching flame with water as she says each number. She repeats the activity until interest wanes.     Block Center

    To the Rescue! Attach flame cutouts to blocks and place them at

    your block center along with pieces of garden hose

    (fire hose), toy fire engines, and plastic toy people.

    A child creates buildings out of blocks, using the

    flame-decorated blocks as desired. Then he uses the

    props for pretend firefighter play. Spatial skills,

    Math Center

    Climb the Ladder For this partner activity, give each child a fire truck

    cutout

    (patterns on page 11), a toy person (firefighter), and 12

    connecting cubes. Scatter number cards from 5 to 12 face-

    down. A child flips a card and identifies the number; then

    each child connects that many cubes to make a ladder.

    Next, each youngster places the ladder on his truck and

    helps the firefighter “climb” to the top, counting each cube

    as he climbs. Then students disassemble the ladders and

    repeat the process, taking turns to flip the remaining cards.
