Scatter number cards from 5 to 12 face- down. A child flips a card and identifies the number; then each child connects that many cubes to make a ladder. Next, each youngster places the ladder on his truck and helps the firefighter “climb” to the top, counting each cube as he climbs. Then students disassemble the ladders and repeat the process, taking turns to flip the remaining cards. Have each child in a small group glue a copy of the dalmatian pattern (page 10) to the bottom of a closed white paper bag as shown. Give each child a black marker. Then call out a number from one to five and have each youngster count aloud as he draws the corresponding number of spots on his puppy. Continue in this manner until each child has made a dotted dalmatian. If desired, have youngsters use their puppets to practice barking from one to five! Five Little Firefighters Youngsters pretend to be firefighters as they recite this red-hot rhyme! Five little firefighters spray the fire. Hold up five fingers; pretend to spray a hose. The first one says, “Put the ladder up higher!” Point one finger upward. The second one says, “This fire’s getting hot!” Hold up two fingers; wipe forehead as if hot. The third one says, “Give the hose another shot.” Hold up three fingers; pretend to hold a water hose. The fourth one says, “Take a look about.” Hold up four fingers; place hand on forehead as if looking around. The fifth one says, “The fire is out!” Hold up five fingers; then clap. For each child in a small group, make a fire hose by covering a paper towel tube with aluminum foil and taping strips of blue crepe paper inside one end as shown. Give each child in the group a hose. Tell youngsters to listen for the begin- ning /f/ sound in the word fire. Then say several words. If a word begins with the /f/ sound, each child pretends to spray water from her hose to put the fire out. If the word does not begin with the /f/ sound, the child sits quietly with the hose in her lap. In an open area, gather youngsters in a large circle. Tell students that if their clothes catch on fire, they need to stop, drop to the ground, cover their faces, and roll back and forth to help put out the fire. Invite a child to demon- strate this technique. Then play some lively music and ask youngsters to march around the circle. When you stop the music, have students stop, drop, and roll. Then resume the music and have young- sters repeat the activity several times.
