We Can
Fire Safety Tips! Help students get fired up about fire safety with these cute pups! Have each student cut out a copy of the dog pattern on page 12. Encourage him to color the hat and add black thumbprint
spots to the dog. After a discussion about fire safety, have him write, or dictate for you to write, on
a blank card a fire safety tip. Then display each card with its corresponding dog cutout.

Make a Match For this small-group game, label pairs of flame cutouts with matching letters. Scatter the flames facedown. To play, a student turns over two flames. If the letters match, youngsters pretend to spray the flames with water; then the student who flipped the flames sets them aside. If the letters do not match, he turns the flames back over. Play continues, in turn, until there are no flames left. Matching letters
Water Table
Call 9-1-1! In your water table, float craft foam flames labeled as shown. Display near the table a sign that says “9-1-1.” Provide a spray bottle filled with water. A child pretends the flames are real and calls out, “I see flames; call 9-1-1!” squirting the matching flame with water as she says each number. She repeats the activity until interest wanes. Safety awareness, number recognition

Block Center
To the Rescue! Attach flame cutouts to blocks and place them at
your block center along with pieces of garden hose
(fire hose), toy fire engines, and plastic toy people.
A child creates buildings out of blocks, using the
flame-decorated blocks as desired. Then he uses the
props for pretend firefighter play. Spatial skills,
community helper role-playing

Climb the Ladder For this partner activity, give each child a fire truck
cutout
(patterns on page 11), a toy person (firefighter), and 12
connecting cubes. Scatter number cards from 5 to 12 face-
down. A child flips a card and identifies the number; then
each child connects that many cubes to make a ladder.
Next, each youngster places the ladder on his truck and
helps the firefighter “climb” to the top, counting each cube
as he climbs. Then students disassemble the ladders and
repeat the process, taking turns to flip the remaining cards.

Dalmatian Dots
Youngsters will see and count s
pots when they
make this cute puppet. Have each
child in a small
group glue a copy of the dalmatian
pattern (page 10) to
the bottom of a closed white paper
bag as shown. Give
each child a black marker. Then ca
ll out a number from
one to five and have each youngste
r count aloud as he
draws the corresponding number o
f spots on his puppy.
Continue in this manner until each c
hild has made a
dotted dalmatian. If desired, have y
oungsters use their
puppets to practice barking from on
e to five!
Five Little Firefighters

hters as they recite this red-hot rhy
me!
Five little firefighters spray the fire.
Hold up five finge

The third one says, “Give the hose
another shot.” Hold up three fing

Musical Stop, Drop, an
d Roll
This movement ac
tivity gets little ones i
n step with
an important fire safe
ty technique. In an op

gather youngsters in
a large circle. Tell stu
dents that
if their clothes catch
on fire, they need to s
top, drop
to the ground, cover t
heir faces, and roll ba
ck and
forth to help put out t
he fire. Invite a child
to demon-
strate this technique.
Then play some live
ly music
and ask youngsters to
march around the cir
cle.
When you stop the m
usic, have students s
top, drop,
and roll. Then resume
the music and have
young-
sters repeat the activi
ty several times.
