Each day continue to practise writing the date and the phase 2 and 3 tricky words and sounds along with letter formation. If your child is finding any of the Phase 3 sounds tricky then please follow the link to the DFE website- each day at 10am they publish a new phonics teaching video
Reading Longer words:
Today we will be practising how to read longer words which can be split into sound chunks or syllables which makes them easier to read. Watch the video to show some examples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP6iVAbjoFA
Parents write a two-syllable word on paper marking a slash between the two syllables (e.g. lunch/box). Sound-talk the first syllable and blend it: l-u-n-ch lunch. Sound-talk the second syllable and blend it: b-o-x box. Say both syllables – lunchbox. Repeat and ask the children to join in. Repeat with these other words:
Shampoo
Helpdesk
Laptop
Cobweb
Helper
Melting
Sandpit
windmill
Children will need 1:1 support with Phonics book 5 pages 42 & 43
Extension challenge: Can you write any of your own sentences containing any longer words e.g.
My sister plays in a sandpit
I have a lunchbox
Caterpillar song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbFkxdZWLQk
Read the Cautious Caterpillar found on our website.
Discuss the different phases in the caterpillar’s life cycle:
The life cycle starts when a butterfly lays her eggs on a leaf or the stemof a plant.
A tiny caterpillar eats its way out of the egg. Caterpillars eat lots of leaves and grow very quickly. As the caterpillar eats more and more, it gets bigger and bigger. This means that the caterpillar needs to shed its skin because itbecomes too tight.
When the caterpillar is fully grown, it changes itself into a chrysalis.
This is the stage that happens after it is a caterpillar, but before it becomes a butterfly. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar changes into a butterfly.
When the butterfly is ready, the chrysalis splits open and the butterfly crawls out. The butterfly cannot fly straight away because its wings are soft, wet and wrinkled.
The butterfly needs to wait until its wings are dry before it can fly.
The butterfly will spend its time feeding from the nectar of flowers. It also drinks water and liquid from fruit.
Activity: Can the children draw their own life cycle of a caterpillar and write what happens at each stage.
Tricky words

Read the story the very hungry caterpillar by Eric Carle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY
After the story see if your child can retell it to you telling you about key events. Can your child create a story map including all of the key events in the story? In the story map write the days of the week and draw what happened on each day:
1. Sunday- egg lay on a leaf
2. Out hatched a caterpillar
3. Monday- ate one apple
4. Tuesday- ate two pears
5. Wednesday- ate three plums
6. Thursday- four strawberries
7. Friday- ate five oranges
8. Saturday- ate one piece of chocolate cake, one ice-cream cone, one pickle, and one slice of Swiss cheese, one slice of salami, one lollipop, and one piece of cherry pie, one sausage, one cupcake and one slice of watermelon.
9. Sunday- ate one green leaf, made a cocoon, then nibbled a hole and out came a beautiful butterfly.
Tricky word recap Phase 2/3/4:

Write some tricky on some paper then using different coloured crayons/pencils/pens can the children trace over the words to make a word rainbow.
Tricky word target game:
Parents to write some tricky words on the floor outside: using a ball/bottle top see if you can throw it onto a word. Can you say read the tricky word that it lands on?

Follow the link to get the Early years section of White Rose Maths- this is the maths scheme they will be using in Year 1. We will be using the resources on the home learning section for Early Years.
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/
The maths lessons this week are all based on the book the Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson: If you have this book then you can give it a read before the lesson. If you don’t have a copy of this book then here is a link to it on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hheolVGZVvs
To see today’s lesson click on the section: Summer Term - Week 6 (w/c 1st June) Click on the Day 1 video to watch the video about what they are doing today: Patterns in nature.
Talk about spirals like a snail’s shell- talk how they start off small and get bigger and bigger. See if you can have a go at drawing your own spirals.
Different kinds of snails have different kinds of shell, some are long and thin. Have a look at the differences. Can you look for other patterns that happen in nature?
Activity: follow the activities on the website to have a go at making a spiral dangler or spiral snacks.

Addition skills
Today’s video looks at simple addition skills- follow the video or print out the activity sheet to practise simple addition word problems.
Topmarks: chopper Squad one more and one less: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/chopper-squad
This is a great game to play if you wish to practise one more and one less than a bit more
Topmarks: Addition to 10 game: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/addition/addition-to-10
Activity: children to draw their own Spiral. Then using their finger can they carefully dot around their spiral to make a pattern? Have a go at using three different colours and creating a repeating pattern.

Counting skills
On each page of the book count how many dangerous things the whale comes across- a copy of pages of the book can be found on our website.
Alternatively complete the “I spy and count minibeasts” sheet. Can the children count how many there are of each minibeast on the screen and write down the correct number?
Activity: Topmarks: have a go at the caterpillar game you can choose either to put the numbers in order from smallest to largest or to sequence the numbers

Odd and even numbers
Follow the activities on the page to look at odd and even numbers- the video can be paused so that your child can count up how many items there are each time.

Watch the video to join in with the higher and lower game. Can they say whether the snail is higher or lower than the worm each time?
Follow the other activities on the video- Make a snail trail and use positional language to talk about where you would go.
Activity: Length measuring: make some worms out of paper, string, playdough etc.
Can your child put them in order from the shortest to the longest?
Alternatively the caterpillar size ordering sheet can be found on the website.
