DISCOVER CU CHI TUNNELSVIETNAM'S DEEP, DARK PAST

The Cu Chi tunnels were the location of several military campaignsduring the Vietnam War, and were the Viet Cong's base of operations

for the Tet Offensive in 1968.

The tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers as hiding spots duringcombat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes,

hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerousNorth Vietnamese fighters.

LIFE IN THE TUNNELS

Air, food and water were scarce and the tunnels wereinfested with ants, poisonous centipedes, scorpions, spiders

and vermin

Most of the time, soldiers would spend the day in the tunnelsworking or resting and come out only at night to scavengefor supplies, tend their crops, or engage the enemy in battle.

Sickness was rampant among the people living in the tunnels,especially malaria, which was the second largest cause of

death next to battle wounds.

U.S. CAMPAIGNS AGAINST THE TUNNELS

The tunnels of Cu Chi did not go unnoticed by U.S. officials.They recognized the advantages that the Viet Cong held with

the tunnels, and accordingly launched several majorcampaigns to search out and destroy the tunnel system.

Operation Crimp began on January 7, 1966, with B-52bombers dropping 30-ton loads of high explosive onto theregion of Cu Chi, effectively turning the once lush jungle into

a pockmarked moonscape.

Throughout the course of the war, the tunnels in and aroundCủ Chi proved to be a source of frustration for the U.S. military

in Saigon.

In all, at least 45,000 Vietnamese men and women are saidto have died defending the Cu Chi tunnels over the course of

the Vietnam War.

TOURISM IN THE CU CHI TUNNELS

In the years following the fall of Saigon in 1975, the Vietnamesegovernment preserved the Cu Chi tunnels and included them in a

network of war memorial parks around the country.

Visitors to Vietnam can now crawl through some of the safer areas ofthe tunnels, view command centers and booby traps, fire an AK-47rifle on a firing range and even eat a meal featuring typical foods that

soldiers living in the tunnels would have eaten.
