What is Budj Bim?

The story of the Gunditjmara people is intimately related to the

volcanic eruption of Mount Eccles around 30,000 years ago, when

an ancestral creation-being revealed himself in the landscape to the

Gunditjmara people.

Budj Bim, meaning high head, is part of the ancestral creation-

being’s body. The mountain is his forehead and the stones are his

teeth.

In addition to the stories of the landscape, this area contains

signficiant cultural heritage arefacts including weirs, eel traps and

stone dwellings.

Who manages the park?

Parks Victoria has a co-management agreement for the national

park with the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners through the Budj

Bim Council. The Council consists of Gunditj Mirring, Glenelg

Hopkins Catchment Management Authority, the Department of

Environment, Land, Water and Planning, and Parks Victoria.

Why change the name?

Consultation on a proposal to rename the park was undertaken

during development of the Ngootyoong Gunditj Ngootyoong Mara

South West Management Plan in 2012 and 2013.

The name of the park was one of the main topics raised in public

submissions in response to the draft plan. The majority of

submissions proposed the single name of Budj Bim National Park.

Following the release of the final plan in May 2015, Budj Bim Council

recommended renaming both the peak and the park Budj Bim.

The proposed name also aligns with the existing Budj Bim National

Heritage Landscape, which was included on the National Heritage

List in 2004.

The renaming will support the growth of sustainable tourism opportunities within the Budj Bim Landscape in a way that is consistent with Gunditjmara values and economic objectives.

1. Rename Mount Eccles (the peak) to Budj Bim

2. Rename Mount Eccles National Park to Budj Bim National Park
