Resilience

“Students who succeed despite the presence of adverse conditions”

Mathematical resilience

Four elements:

• Growth mindset

• Value, purpose or meaning

• Personal agency, struggle & persistence

• Inclusion, support & community

Growth zone diagram

(Lee & Johnston-Wilder, 2013)

Accessible & inclusive activities

• Visual & enactive: not just abstract symbols

• Low floor - high ceiling: open problems where everyone can begin at own level, but extends to more challenging maths

• Meaningful: related to vocational learning, social practices & the real world

Heads & feet

On a farm there were some hens and sheep. Altogether there were 8 heads and 22 feet. How many hens were there?

The picture shows three regular hexagons. What is the same and what is different about them? What can you say about the lengths, angles, sizes, areas, symmetry? Anything else?
