Sitka’s history dates back over 5,000

years ago to the time when it was set-

tled by the Tlingit (KLING-IT) Indians.

At least a quarter of the town’s popula-

tion today can still claim Native ances-

try and their heritage is widely evident

in local woodwork, silver carvings,

basketry, weaving and totem carvings.

Today, Sitka is a virtual paradise for

outdoor enthusiasts and is legendary

for its saltwater, stream and lake fishing

and black-tailed deer hunting as well as

for its hiking, seaplane tours, and sea

kayaking. Sitka’s wildlife is as magnifi-

cent as its scenery. The area is home to

an abundance of land and marine spe-

cies, including brown bears, black-tailed

deer, sea otters, river otters, harbor seals

and bald eagles. Sitka also offers excel-

lent opportunities for whale watching

and bird watching.

The saltwater sport offered by Talon

Lodge is nothing short of fantastic. Ac-

cording to the Alaska Fish and Game

department, Sitka anglers benefit from a

saltwater salmon fishery that is the best

in Alaska. In addition to great salmon

fishing the Halibut fishing is also excep-

tional. Halibut in Sitka frequently weigh

over 100 pounds and are caught within

minutes from the Lodge. Sitka also

provides great Ling Cod and Yellow Eye

fishing.
