Estimated Presentation Time: 60 Minutes brochure
RECOMMENDATION: This item is for Council discussion. It was requested by Councilmembersat the Council retreat this year.
SUMMARY:In 2004, the state granted the City of Mukilteo nearly 4 acres of property next to the PoliceStation, which was dedicated for youth sports recreation purposes. The City then established anagreement with the Boys and Girls Club to allow them to build and operate a community sportsand education facility on the property.
Senator Paull Shin announced his retirement from the legislature in January, 2014, and the CityCouncil approved a resolution that month in support of naming the new Mukilteo Boys andGirls Club facility in honor of his legacy. The Shin Center will serve Mukilteo youth, provide newsports and education facilities, and properly honor Senator Shin’s service to our community.Since that time, the Boys and Girls Club has further developed their project plan and a capitalcampaign.
It has been proposed that the City could participate in supporting the project by donating theproceeds from the sale of the existing Boys and Girls Club facility in Old Town. This would besimilar to the $300,000 in support the City provided to the YMCA when the Skatepark was built.
The Boys and Girls property on 2r Street, owned by Mukilteo, includes two buildable lots andone building built in 1925. When first opened, it was used for dances and community events, asthe school space in 192$ when the original Rosehill School building burned down, as the RoyalNeighbors Lodge, and as a meeting place for the Town Council at times. The property wasdeeded to the City with the restriction that it be used for community benefit.
