SECTION- A (READING – 15 MARKS)
1. Read the passage carefully: 8
(1) Have you ever felt an overwhelming sense of pride and an equally strong sense of alarm,
simultaneously, on watching someone? That‟s how I felt today and before I explain why, I would
like to dedicate this week‟s column to Bhuvan, an extremely talented and confident class X
student at Noida‟s Amity International School. I met Bhuvan two days ago at India‟s first ever
International Young Film maker‟s Festival, organised by Expressions India, a life skills education
initiative. I was fortunate to be on the jury and got to see some fabulous short films made by
young adolescents from India and several countries around the world.
(2) During a break, Bhuvancameupto the jury members holding a big chart. In a supremely confident
tone, he explained that he was running a signature campaign towards the cause of saving the tiger
from extinction. He went to great lengths to convey, complete with statistics, why it was important
for us to seriously take up the cause. While it was a delight to watch someone as young as him possess
such knowledge and passion for a totally worthwhile objective, I also noticed a sense of desperation in
his voice, which was worrying. You know, the kind of desperation you feel when you are trying too
hard to convince someone of the importance of what you‟re saying?
(3) I want to tell Bhuvan that he‟s doing great work, but he‟s also setting himself up for stress
someday. That stress happens whenever we feel so strongly about something that it becomes a
personal crusade, rather than one of the several issues we ought to care about, in life. When we realise
that others don‟t share an equal passion for what we so staunchly believe in, we become vulnerable to
disappointment.
(4) Thanks to increased awareness, the young generation of today is very conscious and
enthusiastic about making a difference. And we can‟t be more grateful for that. But it‟s utterly
important to be pragmatic and realise that there are all kinds of people in this world, even
those who would not care as much, no matter how hard we try. And for the sake of our own
calmness, we should just smile and let them be. What‟s the point if our beliefs are so strong that they
become a deterrent for someone else to be able to feel relaxed in front of us and be what they are.
(5) A friend who has a son aged 14 and daughter aged 9, faced a strange predicament last
Diwali. Her son had taken a pledge in school that, to prevent pollution and protest against child
labour, he‟ll not burst crackers. Every day at the dinner table, he would in very strong words,
repeat how he was totally convinced about crackers being the biggest menace. The evening
before Diwali, my friend noticed her daughter silently sobbing in a corner. When prodded, she
confided to her mom that she loved playing with crackers, though in a limited and safe way.
But she was so stressed and scared about letting herself down in her brother‟s eyes that she
couldn‟t even say it. My friend then sat with both the kids and explained to them, the very
important concept of `you do what you believe in, and let me do what I care about in life.‟
(6) It‟s true not just for young people, but all of us who believe in a cause. If you want to be calm,
just make sure it remains a passion and not an obsession .

Set - 2
Time : 2 hours Maximum Marks: 50
Instructions:
The question paper is divided into THREE sections.
Section A : Reading 15 marks , Section B : Writing 20 marks, Section C : Grammar 15 marks
SECTION- A (READING – 15 MARKS)
1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow : 8
1. Remember when neat, legible writing was a prized skill? Before the digital age, employees
were valued for flowing script? Now employees can go weeks without scribbling anything more
than a telephone number on a post it note. But that does not mean your scrawl does not matter
anymore – writing analysis is an increasingly popular way to screen job applicants.
2. A swell in the popularity of handwriting analysis, or graphology, in overseas European
recruitment could see the trend catch on.
3. “When used correctly, graphology can give a good indication of a person‟s personality structure,
their abilities, ability to grow and develop, and perhaps most importantly, their integrity,“ says
graphologist Margaret White, who uses her skills to assess job applicants for recruiters.
4. But while recruitment–graphology is growing, employers are reluctant to admit they use the
technique. Why?Handwriting analysis is often viewed with skepticism and companies appear to be
afraid that this sentiment will discredit the professionalism of their company.
5. But not all employers are so coy: London banking group Butterfields publicity states that it
uses graphology for recruitment. As managing director Paul Turtle explains : “It is not used as
the defining factor in the decision making process. However, it has been shown to add an
extra dimension to the jigsaw, which has frequently been validated once an employee is in situ.”
6. The British Graphology Institute would certainly agree that the optimum use of graphology in
recruitment is in conjunction with other methods. “Psychometric tests are fine, but they can be
manipulated, as people can change their answers depending on what they think the company wants
to hear,” says a spokesperson. “But used in conjunction with graphology you can double check that
one validates the other”
7. Cynics may suggest that the reason companies are reticent about revealing their use of graphology
is because they use it without an applicant‟s knowledge – although this would be strictly against the
ethics of any professional graphologist. “Graphology is always undertaken with the permission of the
candidate,” says the Graphology Institute.
8. Where problems may arise, of course, is in employers conducting their own impromptu
analysis of an applicant‟s handwriting, based on little besides their own prejudices. For those of
us with less than perfect script, this may certainly raise concerns when applying for jobs that
call for a letter “in own handwriting.” In fact, professional graphologists agree that bad handwriting is
by no means a sign of sloppy work or a lazy attitude to employment – it can frequently mean a high
degree of intelligence and enthusiasm.
9. In any case, it seems writing is getting better. “There was a significant drop in standards
around 20 years ago, says Mr. White. “But then school reintroduced copy books into schools, so in my
opinion the writing submitted by people who are aged 20 to 30 have better handwriting than
previous generations. From a graphologist‟s point of views, the legibility isn‟t necessarily an issue
but handwriting is impossible to fake, as opposed to CVs which tend to be increasingly
embroidered,‟ shall we say. A person might be able to fool me for a few lines, but their true style will
show pretty
quickly particularly if they‟re writing about something they‟re interested in.”
I Fill in the blanks with one word.
The trend of usage of (a)____________ in overseas European recruitments is really catching on. But the
employers seem to be (b)____________ to admit the use of this technique. The reason is the
skepticism related to handwriting analysis and the fear of losing the (c)__________ of the
company. But some are of the view that (d)__________ tests used in conjunction with
graphology will be doubly valid.
II. Answer the following questions in brief -
(a) Why is Graphology considered to be an important technique in the process of recruitment?
(b) What do professional graphologists think about bad handwriting ?
III Pick out the words that mean the same as the following :
(a) having doubts (para 4)

Time : 2 hours Maximum Marks: 45
Instructions:
The question paper is divided into THREE sections.
Section A : Reading 15 marks , Section B : Writing 15 marks, Section C : Grammar 15 marks
SECTION – A (Reading – 15 Marks)
1. Read the passage given below and answer the following. 8
TOWARDS SUCCESS, AWAY FROM REALITY
1. One of the sweetest pleasures of progress is to look back and chuckle at the life we led, the small
dreams we dreamt and marvel at how far we have come. Remember the time when we waited eight
years for a Bajaj Chetak only to make do with a Bajaj Super?
2. With material progress comes the ability to buy new products, to live a more comfortable life. But
new products can do more than change the way we live. Embedded in many new products is a new
way of thinking, a new mindset. Many of us have made the transition from having a `small town‟
mindset to a `metro‟ one, or from having a `typical middle class‟ mindset to a more
`cosmopolitan„ one. These transitions are usually marked by a stronger sense of self confidence about
our individuality and a greater sense of distance between `I‟ and `Others‟.
3. There exists a definite pattern beneath the idea of material progress. Take the progression in
transportation. At the lowest rung of the scale in India, lies public transport. Whether one is
travelling by bus or train, one is part of a nameless mass, inhaling vapours from and rubbing
shoulders and several other parts of one‟s anatomy with anyone who happens to be squashed next
to you. We have no control over the environment, not on the timings of the bus, not on the way it is
driven, and our only concern is to hang on to our precarious perch as the bus lurches its way to its
destination. The bus is the reality that is given to us and our only role is to be the
undistinguished oatmeal in the sticky human porridge of bus passengers.
4. From public transport to owning a twowheeler is a huge step. Now, one has a personal form of
transport, which means that control now rests with the individual. In the Indian context, this is
important, since it marks a certainindependence, a coming of age. Owning a twowheeler underlines
the independence of one‟s entity, armed as one is with the ability of going when and where as one
pleases. There is a cost to be paid; we are exposed to the elements, there is no escaping the sights,
sounds and smells of the formidable reality that roam free on Indian streets.
5. If the twowheeler is primarily about personal control, the car provides a personal cocoon a
home on wheels. We are now shielded from the elements; we travel as a family and can continue
behaving as one, in spite of the travelling. It makes us relatively indifferent to the act of travel and
allows us to continue our normal pattern of living, regardless.
I On the basis of the above passage fill up the blanks using one word.
The passage tells us about the (a)__________ progress which has made life comfortable. It is not
only the inventions of new products but a new (b) __________. This new way of thinking exhibits
