EME with digital modes 144 MHz • SM4GGC Stig Larsson

• Ham radio licensed since 1973

• Active on VHF/UHF 1973-1983 and from 2012-

• EME 1979-1983 and from 2012-

Agenda

• Modes for digital EME • WSJT 10 “Weak Signal Joe Taylor” (K1JT) • WSJT-X “Weak Signal Joe Taylor” (K1JT) • MSHV (LZ2HV) • MAP65 Broad band receiving software (K1JT) • EME setup • Antennas for EME • EME tools • Result and possibilities

JT65

● Modulation mode created by Joe Taylor – K1JT in 2003

● DSP techniques optimized for extremely weak but slowly varying

signals (moon bounce) and narrow bandwidth

● Uses 65-frequency shift keying with a sync tone and low data rates (2,69

baud)

● Can use ”Deep Search table” = Call3 file (list of stations known to do EME)

for error correction

● Decode signals many decibels below the noise floor about -24 dB without

Deep Search and with Deep Search about -28 dB

JT65 QSO

● Fixed and Expected Message, Grid and Callsign Formats

● CQ SM4GGC JO69

● SM4GGC KD7UO CN87

● KD7UO SM4GGC OOO

● RO “Short hand message” for RO, RRR and 73 (two tones)

● RRR

● 73

JT65B message bandwidth 355 Hz

RO 73 Short hand message

QRA64

● Modulation mode created by IV3NVV Nico Palermo 2016

● Q-ary(63,12) repeat-accumulate code. Operationally similar to JT65 but there are no sync tone and no two-tone short hand message.

● NO ”Deep Search table” = Call3 file (list of stations known to do EME) for error correction. Only using a priori information

● Better than JT65. Decodes full 72-bit message about -28 dB and Locator or report at -30 dB

QRA64 QSO

● Fixed and Expected Message, Grid and Callsign Formats

● CQ SM4GGC JO69

● SM4GGC W2HRO FN20

Get started with WSJT 10 Interface from Radio to PC • Mic, AF-out and Comport PC to TX Key Sync your computer clock • Automatically sync computer time with Dimension 4 http://www.thinkman.com/dimension4/ Settings on the tranciver • USB mode on • Broadest Filter Width (5KHz) • Noise blanker can be active • AGC off • Modulate TX until you se a some ALC level on transceiver ( Ok for slow modes in EME like JT65 and QRA64)

WSJT-X Echo mode

MSHV By LZ2HV

Uses the free codec's software from K1JT No support for Deep search Only JT65 for EME so far Fast development New version is coming every month

MAP65 Broad band receiver software for EME K1JT

Can be use with a SDR-radio single channel or dual channel with common local oscillator for Adaptive Polarization

Installing MAP65 and the FUNcube Pro+ http://kb5wia.blogspot.se/

Low cost alternative for single channel solution FunCube Dongle Pro+ or other SDR-Dongle

• 1 Yagi possible to QSO 4 Yagi station

• 2 Yagi possible to QSO other 2 Yagi station

• Good solution 4 yagi • Big advantage to use X-yagi

• Optimal is to use Adaptive polarization in RX

Result and possibilities

• EME since 2012- over 1 600 QSO

• Different call signs total 678

• Stations QRV on 144 MHz EME could be more than 1000

• So what are you waiting for?

SM4GGC Thanks for me
