The whole show revolves around Dr. Cal lightman and his colleagues as

solve their investigations through

interpreting microexppresions

characters

Dr. Cal Lightman is a British

scientist who specializes in the use of body language and microexpressions.

He formed “The Lightman Group”, a private company aimed TO assist

investigations of federal law through applied psychology.

The character is based on Dr. Paul EKMAN, a psychologist and expert on body language and facial expressions at University of California, San

Francisco.

Dr. Gillian Foster is a gifted, well-rounded psychologist able to read people through their

words and voices.

She also is capable of conveying subtle expressions but not as insightfully as Dr.

Lightman.

She is Lightman’s professional partner and also his second hand.

Eli loker is one of the lead researchers of the Lightman Group (VIDEO ANALYSIS).

One of the educated employees, he learned how to apply microexpressions through practice.

He adheres to Radical Honesty, to explain his unusual sense for telling the truth even if

it makes him seem rude.

Ria Torres is one of the

rare “naturals” when it comes to reading people using

involuntary body language.

she’s been referred to as a protEgE with Dr. Lightman as the mentor.

she is envied by Lightman because of her innate abilities; Abilities which

Lightman had to learn for years.

Emily is the precocious 16 yr old Daughter of divorced Cal and Zoe

Lightman.

one of the main techniques used by

authors for centuries. Knowing the characters well

may make the action a bit slow at first but it makes remainder of the story so much

more enjoyable.

first half of the first season shows the

four central characters divided into two crimes per

episode - arranged as a segue into each of

the characters personality,

introduction on the way they handle

certain cases

tome

LieIt’s notable how

some crimes reflect that of the

detective’s personal life, evidently seen in Episode 10 of the first season “Better

Half”tome

LieMoreover, in Episode 08 – Depraved Heart, it was revealed that

Dr. Lightman’s reason for focusing on

microexpressions was due to his mother’s

unobserved desire to commit suicide .tome

DR. Lightman

A SCIENTIFIC DETECTIVE3

rd

Obviously, Dr. Lightman came

from the scientific world.

uses science to determine whether the person is lying or telling the truth, eventually solving the crime

Holmes - The way he relates with other people and colleagues, & investigates his crimes; similar to Sherlocks relationship with Watson

Dupin – the way he distances himself from the world; knowledge of crimes is limited by newspaper clippings, the same way Lightman, although more interactive, is generally approached by third parties to help investigate as an independent investigator

Spade - he is not really the most respectful and

polite person on the planet, AAevident in the

way he interacts with people, just like Spade

who is generally described as hostile and

bastos

Fr. Brown- the way Lightman views Truth over Facts. It is somehow a moral issue for him.

Whodunnit-Cozy-Mystery of Manner & Puzzle/Locked Room 4

TH

cozy type of mystery -there is little blood seen in the episodes.

the main and minor characters are not poor people but upper or middle class ones that associates with

the “cozy” type of mystery.

DoyLe, Chesterton,

Christie, were some of the

pioneers to first use this type of detective fiction

and crime.

at least two stories in the

episodes wherein the crimes were done in a locked room setting.

The Best Policy – AN episode where A

scientist stole A new experimental drug.

Though this is only a minor case in the investigation, her

crime was committed in a

locked room set up.

Better Half – The wife of A

reporter planned to burn the

house of her husband’s

mistress. she did not succeed;

the mother of the mistress

died.

The crime was done in a locked room that killed not the targeted

one – can be said not a

successful one.

Unchained – Though the

crime was not literally shown in the episode,

it was more likely that the firefighter was

killed in a locked room by

his co-firefighter to protect the

code.
