EGNOS and Galileo: the Two Pillars of the

European Positioning, Navigation and Timing Infrastructure

Dr. ing. Marco Lisi European Space Agency

(marco.lisi@esa.int, marco.lisi@ieee.org)

UASD, Santo Domingo, 4 February, 2016

Summary • Global Navigation Satellite Systems, such as GPS,

GLONASS, Galileo and Beidou, constitute a worldwide utility, tightly interconnected with all other critical infrastructures (electric power distribution networks, air traffic management systems, railways, water and oil piping networks, telecommunications;

• EGNOS and Galileo are the key elements of the European PNT “system of systems”, a strategic and critical infrastructure of the European Union;

• EGNOS, the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service, is already fully operational and providing services;

• The Galileo global navigation satellite system, joint initiative by the European Union and the European Space Agency, is one of the most ambitious and technologically advanced service systems being developed in Europe, by European industries and with European resources.

Resumen • Los sistemas mundiales de navegación por satélite, tales como

GPS, GLONASS, Galileo y Beidou, constituyen una utilidad de todo el mundo, fuertemente interconectada con el resto de infraestructuras críticas (redes de distribución de energía eléctrica, sistemas de gestión del tráfico aéreo, ferrocarriles, redes de agua y tuberías de petróleo, telecomunicaciones;

• EGNOS y Galileo son los elementos clave del "sistema de sistemas" Europeo de PNT, una infraestructura estratégica y crítica de la Unión Europea;

• EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) ya está en pleno funcionamiento y hace prestación de servicios;

GALILEO Program Essentials • Galileo is Europe's initiative for a state-of-the-art global

navigation satellite system, providing a highly accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control;

• While providing autonomous navigation and positioning services, Galileo will at the same time be interoperable with GPS and GLONASS, the two other global satellite navigation systems;

• The fully deployed Galileo system will consist of 30 satellites (24 plus 6 spare) and the supporting ground infrastructure.
