Dona has lived an interesting life; she was born and raised in the Chicago area, ventured into retail, at age 15 getting jobs at Marshall Fields and other department stores, worked for an attorney AND a private detective (all without the benefit of a work permit!). She met her future husband, Michael, at the University of Chicago, where they married and moved to Denver. She has been a very successful Realtor for the past 45 years, and as such, she is on the site committee, helping to find a new Museum location.
At age 6 Dona received her first dollhouse, a Rich Toys, pressed board, 6 room house with furniture AND a doorbell, which was a bicycle bell hidden behind the stairwell. She was taken to see the Colleen Moore dollhouse at the Museum of Science and Industry, and “fashioned” hers to be a similar but smaller version, constantly decorating and adding things. At age 12 when asked if she wasn’t too old to be playing with dollhouses, she indignantly replied, “NO, I’M NOT!!!” After moving away she was dismayed to find her mother had gotten rid of the dollhouse, but fortunately, her mother hadn’t found the furniture Dona had stashed away. You can see Dona’s Dollhouse in the Exhibit Room, but you will have to ask her how she got it here.
Dona says, “A very dark period in my life happened with the unexpected death of my daughter, Leah. With the help and love of countless miniature friends, I persevered. Many of these friends have been close friends for over 40 years and for that I feel truly blessed.”
She never lost her interest in all things small. When she learned of a miniature show being held in a Mall she quickly attended, got the information, paid her dues and joined The Mile High Miniature Club on the spot. Little did she know that for the next 37 years she would be consumed with fund-raising, advertising, printing flyers, organizing Sunday Brunches, arranging Exhibits (both at the Museum and the Fall Shows), making favors, donating raffle items, serving and/or chairing a committee for every Fall Show and chairing the whole Show THREE times! Dona is very creative with hands and heart, working with wood, fabric, clay, paper and always taking on new and different challenges.
It was a shock to return to Chicago and see the Colleen Moore dollhouse with adult eyes and she found it hard to believe that she ever thought her dollhouse was similar in any way whatsoever, however, she believes “the miniature world” IS the “real” world and we just have to work around this day-to-day imaginary one!”
