MicroArcticOutreachinLyonstarted(Feb2017)withsomebasicenvironmentalmicrobiologyclasses–10classesfor11yearoldsand15year-olds.Here’sTimVogelandESRRoseLayton:

Duringtheseclasses,thestudentshadalectureandthenlookedatdifferentbacteriathroughthemicroscope.BacteriacamefromEvianwater,thelocalpond’sicecover,andamicrobialfuelcell.

TimVogelintroducedthesciencepartofthedaylong(March13,2017)discussionaboutclimatechange,GreenlandandtheArcticinfrontofmorethan150studentsfromthe“CSI”.

CatherineLarose(CNRSandpartoftheLyonteam,responsiblefortheWP1)gaveanintroductiontotheArctic

AlexAnesio(coordinatorofMicroarcticandProfessoratBristolUniversity)describedthegoalsoftheEUfundedMarieCurieITN“Microarctic”includingthedifferentaspectsofenvironmentalmicrobiologyandbiotechnology.ProfessorsAurélienDommergueandTimVogellookedon.

CarstonS.Jacobsen(Headofthestart-upmBioInformandProfandDepartmentChairatAarhusUniversityinDenmarkandpartnerofMicroarctic)describedhisworkinGreenland.

TheyoungerstudentscreatedposterswithtextandphotossuppliedbyDr.CatherineLaroseandthenexplainedthemtotheaudience.

Studentshadtimetobrowseandlookatthepostersduringbreaksintheday.

Theafternoonstartedwithbrainstorming(ideashower),duringwhichstudentsthoughtofideastoaddressinthesmallerafternoonworkshops.NathalieBisson,CSIbiologyteacher,encouragedstudentparticipation.

Theworkshopideasweresummarizedunderdifferentheadings:Solutions:Transportation,Energy(startdoing,stopdoing),Resources,Security/Safety,Protection,SocialandEnvironmentalcharacteristics.Thenthestudentsraisedtheirhandstoselectinwhichsubjectworkshoptheywantedtoparticipate.
