Duncan Flood Event – Lessons Learned

Public Safety Department

Building up the existing dike along Beverly Street

Nanaimo Fire Services Presentation June 2010

The massive effort to stop the flood waters flowing into a dense neighbourhood

Initial Low Dike building on roadway• Long rolls of heavy duty poly laid down along

roadway on the side the water is coming from• Use cement truck full of sand to run the

course and lay a 1 – 2 foot “bead” of sand the length of the poly

• Fold poly up and over on both sides• Place regular sandbags every two feet to keep

poly sealed

Nanaimo Fire Services Presentation June 2010

Initial Dike complete, pumping begins and a rainbow gives us hope

Developing a more secure dike to get us through the winter

Filling the gaps – to save time, just fold under the tops of the sandbags

Time to call it a day?

Thank you!
