OMAGGIO
OMAGGIOMusic composed to honor
Throughout the centuries composers have crafted music to honor individuals;serenades written by Johanes Brahms were dedicated to Clara Schumann or Beethoven’sEroica Symphony crafted to honor Napoleon Bonaparte. Choral music shares in this his-tory; Josquin’s Missa Hercules dux Ferrariae was dedicated to Ercole d'Este I, Duke of Fer-rara and Morten Lauridsen’s Lux aeterna written in honor of his mother. All are examplesof music written to pay homage or tribute. Our twelfth season begins with four unac-companied works also written to honor. Join the de Angelis singers for an evening oftribute, featuring music of Palestrina, Howells, Rutter, and the rarely performed Omag-gio de Marenzio of Dutch composer Hendrik Andriessen.

THE ANNUALHOLIDAY CONCERT
CAROLS ANCIENTCAROLS NEW
The first carols were sung thousands of years ago in Europe and were first asso-ciated with the winter solstice. The term carol originally meant to dance, and ancient peo-ples would dance round stone circles to celebrate each of the four seasons. With theadvent of Christianity, carols became part of Christmas celebrations. Our Christmas pro-gram this season explores the wealth of Christmas carols, both ancient and new, withnew settings of traditional carols and modern reinterpretations of Medieval and Renais-sance gems, including Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Es ist ein Ros entsprungen, Nova! Nova!,O Tannenbaum and Stille Nacht.

Via crucis is a devotional program of choral music that reflects the venerationand devotion of the faithful, recalling the path Christ traveled to his passion. The deAngelis Ensemble performs works from the 16th to 21st centuries, following the ViaCrucis and ending with a new and glorious setting of Fredrik Sixten’s Alleluia as a prel-ude to the joy of Easter. Join us for an eclectic combination of masterworks includingMonteverdi, Poulenc, Tallis, Harris, Schütz, Casals and Bruckner.

FLIGHTS OF FANCY
FLIGHTS OF FANCYTaking Flight
Take flight with the de Angelis ensemble, and our final program of the season,in a thematic program dedicated to the art of flight. The highlight of the program is EricWhitacre’s Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine. The dramatic content of this composi-tion tells the story of Leonardo being tormented by the calling of the air, tortured to sucha degree that his only recourse was to solve the riddle and figure out how to fly. Otherworks on the program include a humorous mix addressing flying birds, mosquitos, andEzekiel’s wheel.
And my soul stretched out wide its wings, flew through the quiet lands, as if flying itself home.
