Challenge

• How ready is your Organisation for Social Learning?

Totally Somewhat Not...

Our Journey

• Part 1: Social Learning Design

• Part 2: The Environment

• Part 3: Community

• Part 4: Outcomes and Adaptation

Part 1: Social Learning Design

Our Journey• Part 1: Social Learning Design

• Our Challenge - the case study we will work on

• Learning Methodology - six steps to learning

• Scaffolded Social Learning - a design methodology

• Choreography - total design approach

• Part 2: The Environment

• Part 3: Community

• Part 4: Outcomes and Adaptation

Our Challenge• We need to develop a Leadership Development

programme for 800 engineers and sales people in a global aviation & engineering business

• We will look at four stages of this:

• Social Learning in the design of the programme

• The Environment it will run in

• The learning community, and how we nurture it

• Measuring outcomes and adapting

The Population• The challenge is to build an 'Innovation Leadership'

programme for 800 leaders in an established global business.

• The population includes:

• 100 senior leaders representing Asia, Europe, Middle East and the US

• 200 graduates

• 200 front line sales people

• 300 from a new startup acquisition, mainly engineers

The Current Offering• A three month programme:

• 2 x 1 week residential courses, wk1 and wk 12

• Workbook based study to complete

• Weekly 'CEO video' to challenge them

• Graduation ceremony for those in the US

Key Business Challenges

• Stalled innovation programme

• Low engagement survey results

• No common IT platform (legacy system for acquisition)

• Disrupted industry

Take 5 mins: Decide

• What are the key challenges?

• What will a successful outcome look like?

Learning Methodology:

Designing for performance

Choose one of these per table: 10 mins

• Outline one way you can do each of these six things:

• Set context

• Demonstrate core learning

• Explore

• Reflect

• Assess

• Support Footsteps

Choose one of these per table: 10 mins

• Agree on a co-creative design principle

• Share an example of it at work

Choreography

Choose one of these per table: 10 mins

• How will we PROGRAMME the learning

• What is our POSTURE

• What principles will drive our PERFORMANCE

Challenge

• Design a learning journey for the project. Include:

• How would you apply the methodology?

• The formal and social elements: what will you 'give', what will be 'co-created'

Break

Our Journey• Part 1: Social Learning Design

• Part 2: The Environment

• Technology - diverse ecosystems and needs

• Running Order - delivering the experience

• Rules - co-creating and enforcing

• Part 3: Community

• Part 4: Outcomes and Adaptation

Learning Technology:

The state of play

Challenge

• What kind of ecosystem do we want to build?

Challenge

• What technology is available in your own organisation to support learning?

• What constrains you? What enables you?

Challenge

• What types of technology would you use for each aspect of the architecture?

Challenge

• What constrains you? What enables you?

Challenge

• Design a learning journey for the project. Include:

• How would you apply the methodology?

• The formal and social elements: what will you 'give', what will be 'co-created'

• The Choreography

Rules

Challenge

• How would you set the rules?

Lunch

Our Journey• Part 1: Social Learning Design

• Part 2: The Environment

• Part 3: Community

• Trust - it's impact on engagement and strategies to earn

• Support - how we nurture and grow the community - facilitating roles

• Storytelling - the three levels of narrative - how we use stories

• Part 4: Outcomes and Adaptation

Challenge

• How important is Trust in Social Learning?

Very Somewhat Not Very

Challenge

• How many people have 'trust' in your organisation

Over 90% About 50% Less Than 10%

Trust

Challenge

• What strategies can you use to earn trust in Social Learning?

Scaled up to culture

Health

Challenge

• Come up with four points you can use to measure the health of your Learning Communities.

Challenge

• Where do stories live in your organisation?

• Formal and social ones

Challenge

• What supporting roles do you have?

Community

Where are your communities?

The purpose of community

Your role in community

Challenge

• Design a learning journey for the project. Include:

• How would you apply the methodology?

• The formal and social elements: what will you 'give', what will be 'co-created'

• The Choreography

Our Journey• Part 1: Social Learning Design

• Part 2: The Environment

• Part 3: Community

• Part 4: Outcomes and Adaptation

• Measurement - what, how, why

• Iteration - how we prototype and adapt

• Reward - social and formal recognition

Challenge

• How will you measure the success?

• What are the key challenges for iteration?

• What reward mechanisms does your organisation use? What does it need?
