description

What is the best way to design instruction for today’s technology tools, for stand-up instruction, and for eLearning? Many designers struggle to answer that question because you must match the right learning content with the right instructional strategy and design instruction in a way that ensures it will “stick” with the learner. Often, this matching can be the difference between success and failure of a learning program. In this interactive session you will learn simple techniques instructional designers use to create compelling and meaningful instruction based on applying proper instructional strategies and techniques to specific types of content. You will explore examples demonstrating how to match content with the right learning strategy that range from creating stories to developing analogies to properly chunking factual content. You will discover how to leverage the correct matching of content to your instructional strategy to create effective, engaging learning opportunities.

It looks like Larry was playing some type of Jeopardy-Game when the incident occurred.

So…for what type of content is a Jeopardy-

type game the most appropriate strategy?

Page 22: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Hmm, I think we need to learn more about

instructional strategies, I know just

who to ask.

We need to visit one of the toughest L&D folks I know. The Learning

Lady.

Page 23: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Let’s get going to her favorite hangout.

Page 24: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

On her lunch hour she hangs at a place called “The Dinner”

Page 25: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Yeah, she was a former school teacher. As wicked with the red pen as they come.

Oh, no I don’t.

It’s not “The Dinner.” It’s “The Diner.”

Page 26: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

So tell me about instructional strategys.

…strategys No! …strategies Yes!

Page 27: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

First, let me tell you about the most basic type of content known

to humankind.

Page 28: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

“Declarative.” It’s Factual information that can only be learned

through memorization.

Page 41: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

It was a short trip to The King Pin’s Office.

Page 42: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

He appeared to be expecting me….

I was expecting you.

I got a text you were coming.

Page 43: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Hello King Pin. Call me Bob.

Hi, ya Bob.

Page 44: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

I need to know about instructional strategies.

I only know about Conceptual Content.

Start talk’n Bob.

Actually, I think I’d like you to call me King Pin.

Page 45: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Conceptual Content is the grouping of ideas or

objects having common attributes.

Page 46: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Let me ask you a question detectives...

Page 47: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

There are two types of concepts—Concrete

Concepts and Abstract Concepts.

Page 48: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

I’m listening.

Concrete concepts are things you can touch, like a table

or a chair.

Abstract concepts are things you can’t touch like

customer service or compliance.

Page 49: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

How does one teach concepts?

Page 50: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Examples and non-examples of the concept.

Take the concept of a chair…what are the

attributes of a chair?

Page 51: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

What else you got?

Page 53: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Metaphors

The ADDIE Model is a road map.

Creating engaging instruction is like writing a mystery novel.

Being in compliance is as easy as following a recipe.

A metaphor transfers the sense or associations of one word or idea to

another.

Page 54: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Now we need to find Ivan…the Informant...

Page 62: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

I knew one of his old hangouts...

Page 63: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

He was about as friendly as a ghost on Halloween with no one to haunt.

Hello, again clueless…

Page 64: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Look I am going to ask you a question about Procedural Content.

He was about as friendly as a ghost on Halloween with no one to haunt.

Page 65: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3

Procedural Content is step-by-step instructions for performing a task.

Page 66: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

He grabbed his typewriter and made some notes to explain about Procedural Content.

Page 67: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Strategy One: Part-to-Whole

De-construct the procedure, teach the

individual parts and then have the

learners put it back together again.

Page 68: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy
Page 69: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Strategy Three:

Why?

Teach the “Why”

behind a process

or a procedure to

provide the

context for

troubleshooting

and for

understanding the

steps.

Page 70: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Procedures are a bunch of “strung-together” concepts.

If the learner is having problems with the procedure, it might be they don’t

understand the underlying concepts.

Page 71: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Riddle me this…which verbs do you think are

indicators of Procedural Content?

Page 72: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Page 83: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Have a seat.

Page 84: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

There is no chair.

Page 85: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Ok, look…here are three ways to teach problem solving….

Page 86: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Experts are different from novice learners because an expert can apply knowledge

learned from multiple experiences and adapt it to a new experience.

Page 87: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

So give learners: - Multiple, Realistic Scenarios (case studies)

- Problem-based Learning Experiences - Third-Person“Thinkers”

Page 88: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Ok so for what type of knowledge is a

matching game most appropriate?

She turned on her computer to show me an example…

Page 89: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy
Page 90: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Also experts solve problems by asking themselves different questions than novices.

Provide a list of prompts or questions to help trigger thoughts and question sets.

There is a list of questions in the folder I gave you. Did you even look? Ugh.

Page 91: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy
Page 92: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Create a learning documentary of how to do a job, how decisions are

made, how dots are connected.

Then she turned on the oldest TV I’d ever seen…to some Reality TV show…What was this? Appointment Television?

Show learners how experts think through problems and solve them.

It’s a “think aloud.”

Page 93: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Great stuff, how about the verbs for problem solving.

Again…in the folder…again ugh.

Page 94: DevLearn Presentation: Matching the Right Learning Content with the Right Learning Strategy

Let’s see if we know some of the verbs before we check the folder.
