Der, die oder das?

• In German all nouns have a gender.They can be masculine (der), feminine (die) or neuter (das).

• Der, die and das are definite articles. They are the equivalent to “the” in English.

• Die is also used with plural nouns of any gender.

Spiel-Was ist das?1. Find a partner.2. Search the room for 10 items. Once

you have found an item, use a dictionary to look up the noun.

3. Write on the mini-white board the name (auf Deutsch) and the gender of the noun.

4. The first team to complete all 10 will win!

Ein und eine• Ein and eine are indefinite articles.

They are equivalent to “a” and “an” in English. Indefinite articles are only used with singular nouns.
