Leadership Miami is a program sponsored by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. The program develops talents and broadens perspectives of present and future community leaders by providing them with practical information concerning community problems and issues.
Leadership Miami is designed to stimulate and develop community leaders. The program develops a sense of community stewardship in the participants and all citizens of the county.
Leadership Miami is the leading force to make things happen in this community.
Dedicated to Dade (“D2D”), is a proud member of the 2010 Leadership Miami Class. D2D has developed a sustainable project that will cater to the needs of individuals living in the Overtown community of Town Park Village. Through its endeavour D2D will enhance the lives of the residents by embarking upon multiple projects to promote education and a safer environment. The Community will recognize Town Park Village as a residential complex that takes pride in the maintenance of its facility grounds, cares for the wellness, educational, social, and recreational desires of its residents, and ultimately, provides a safe place to live.
Enhancing lives at Town Park Village
Overtown’s Town Park VillageDana Milson, a teacher at Miami Norland High School and member of the Town Park Village
board, believes the complex is on its way to
regaining the stature it once held in Overtown.
“From the beginning when the complex
opened in 1971, when it was brand new, everyone
who lived in Overtown wanted to live here.”
Nestled in the heart of Overtown is Town Park Village (TPV). Town Park Village is a 170-unit co-op with an active community of residents in Overtown. TPV was built in the early 1970’s and for several decades, the community was a cultural mecca, with active churches, theaters, nightclubs, restaurants, and businesses. Three decades later, Town Park Village is still standing within the Overtown community of Miami, and today the poorest community in one of the nation’s poorest cities.
Overtown’s Town Park VillageD2D chose this community because: (1) Overtown is an impoverished community, in which an range of services are desperately needed to activate positive change; (2) TPV is a large residential complex that houses over 200 residents of this community, both adults and children; (3) Focusing the project efforts on creating educational opportunities and promoting safety will enhance the quality of life of many people, as well as (4) enhancing the appearance of this facility to invoke a sense of pride and ownership.
transformationThe residents of Town Park Village have identified top priorities for their community: a security camera system; and a revitalized Resource Center. Currently, there are no security cameras at TPV, and the urban complex is in great need of an additional security. With installation of a comprehensive security camera and monitoring system, residents will feel a far greater sense of security.
TPV has also determined to develop a place for their over 100 youth to learn and grow, and where seniors can gather. The Resource Center is a former residential unit that is now utilized by school-age residents for tutoring and recreation at limited times. In its current configuration, it is woefully inadequate for comprehensive learning and social gathering. D2D seeks to transform the Center with new computers, furnishings, and staff to best serve the educational needs of the residents.
transformationContributions are being sought to purchase and
install the equipment needed to complete the project. The physical transformation of TPV will
not be without an investment in human resources to maintain this investment. Therefore, we are
seeking underwriting opportunities to also sponsor tutoring, music lessons, workshops, even meals
for the young residents.

Town Park Village is in need of a system of wireless security cameras with monitors and recording capability. D2D is raising funds or seeking the donation of the necessary equipment
with installation to help this community achieve the security each of us expects when we come home. The estimated cost to install and complete the entire project is $20,000.

Our group is seeking funds, materials or services for a variety of initiatives: upgrades to the electrical and phone capabilities; the purchase of electronics such as a new television; custom counters and installation; swivel chairs, and shelves. Additionally, we will create a reading room which will be equipped
with books, homework and project supplies and media resources. We will also remodel the kitchen area with new cabinets and appliances. Contributions are also being sought to purchase additional furnishings along with educational supplies, and printers.
To compliment the physical transformation of the Center, we are seeking underwriting to sponsor tutoring, music lessons, workshops and even meals.
