The Vicar Writes……December 2014
ear FriendsThe media proclaims "It's Christmas" and "Christmas" is a busy time of year. The traffic is heavy on the streets. The stores are full of people looking for and buying gifts. Trees are being put up and decorated with flashy decorations. Houses are decorated with multicoloured lights. The streets of our towns and cities are flashing with pretty lights. Little boys and girls are looking for Santa Claus and it seems everyone is trying to spread cheer and promote good will -‐ when it's not Black Friday bargain hunting! It is the Christmas celebration. It is the birthday of the Saviour of the world.
So how should we celebrate Christmas? Just over 2,000 years have passed since that first Christmas and much has been added by each generation of people. We know that a lot of activities associated with Christmas are not right -‐ all the greed and gluttony etc. but we must say that every special thing done in the name of Christmas is saying to the world that Christ Jesus was born. For this, we praise the Lord. Above all of our Christmas festivities, there should be the celebration of worshipping the Lord Jesus Christ.
I said that the media proclaims "It's Christmas" but when should we celebrate Christmas? Well, as you know, December 25th has been set aside as the day to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. To calculate the exact time of His birth would be impossible now. So, whether it is correct or not, December 25th is the day set aside and known to all the world as the day we acknowledge the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Thirdly where should we celebrate Christmas? There will be Christmas parties in all kinds of places and many will see behaviour which will be regretted and, I would guess, most of them will not mention Jesus. Christmas should be a home time when family is drawn together in the
Parish of Killay December 20144
spirit of love. Christmas time should be a church time when we come together as a family in a special worship time. But, above all, we should celebrate the birthday of our Saviour in our own individual hearts. We should give Him first place in our hearts. We should truly worship Him as God the Son and we should give ourselves to Him in service to spread His message of love and salvation.
Can I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and every blessing for 2015 on behalf of my family and myself.
Yours in Christ
Remembrance Concert
People have all commented that the concert was absolutely fabulous. The Choir were on form as were Hywel Evans and Ros Evans. We were so fortunate to have such an array of talent. Thanks must go also to Roger Rees for producing such a wonderful programme which was the subject of much praise. I would like to thank our sponsors, everybody who helped in any way and I would like to especially thank Mr David Vaughan for his hard work and for being the driving force behind the whole project.

Extract from PCC Meeting held on 2nd Nov. 2014 re new Ministry AreasSteve Gardner has been appointed Chairman of the Steering Group involved with the Ministry Areas.Father Tim said that there were many questions and listed the following as things he had been asked:
1. How are the Ministry Areas to be financed?2. What form/pattern will our services take?3. Will individual Parishes control their own Parishes?
and he, further, stated that he understood that there would be a reduction in Stipendiary and not the Parish Share.A further exchange of views took place with Steve suggesting that working together and sharing human resources would help us meet the challenges; he was confident that our church services would be safe but opportunities would be available for newer type of services – not just for the younger generation but for other age groups also. He explained that there would be more trained ministers and not less but they would be unpaid – he supported the idea of giving power to every individual who attended church. He continued that we needed to be inside and not outside and look afresh at joint worship; try and persuade people to attend joint worship – not opting out before opting in. The vicar replied that he wanted joint evening worship but he was against joint morning worship – his reasons were that 70% of our Parishioners did not attend any Church on the morning that we were at Tycoch.Additional comments were made about loss of income too.The vicar summed up by saying that the Parish would be hosting a social evening for all three PCC’s on Jan 20th 2015. He wanted people to sit and talk, express their concerns and get to know people from the other churches. Vicar would be preparing and cooking the meal, Tycoch would be supplying wine with Sketty contributing to the financing of the event. He suggested inviting the Bishop of St Asaph or Lucy Wincett, as interesting and knowledgeable speakers, to attend the event.

Music SocietyAn excellent number of members braved the foul weather conditions as we welcomed the Swansea Hand Bell Ringers, from St Mary’s Church, to our November meeting – their third visit in as many years.Mr Peter Conibear, a retired Military Bandmaster, an excellent musician himself and leader of the group, explained how the Hand Bell Ringing Scale is based on an individual style derived from Hungarian Folk Music by the Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly who lived from 1882 – 1967. I seem to remember that children learned to play recorders from the same scale. The first selection of tunes, which were played, comprised of ‘A Musical Clock: Oranges & Lemons say the Bells of St Clement’ – appropriate at Remembrance time as St Clement Danes is the Regimental Chapel of the RAF. This was followed by ‘The Ashgrove’ then a ‘Russian Dance’ by Beethoven, the ‘Largo’ from Dvorak’s ‘New World Symphony’ – perhaps best remembered from the television Hovis advert and ending with ‘Endearing Young Charms’.Peter introduced the next selection as ‘Songs that won the war’ and there was much foot tapping and muted community singing as we listened to ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’, ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’, ‘Daisy Daisy’, ‘Goodbye Dolly I Must Leave You’ and ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’.Volunteers were invited to try their hand at bell ringing and eight of our members made a really good fist of playing ‘Tipperary’, especially as an encore!A very entertaining evening was enjoyed by everyone and very much appreciated. As it was decided to postpone the Annual Dinner until January, the next meeting will be on January 12th 2015 and the Dinner is being arranged for January 19th 2015.In thanking all members for their loyal support during 2014 and all those who entertained us, particularly church members, we wish everyone a ‘Happy and Blessed Christmas’ and a ‘Happy and Healthy New Year’.

Ladies GuildOur speaker on 29th October was Barbara Cummings who came to tell us about her experience of winning a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show, at her first attempt.Barbara is a member of Swansea Floral Society and has City and Guilds, level 3, in flower arranging. Having lived most of her married life in South Africa, she lovesexotic blooms and grasses, both of which featured in her winning arrangement. She had applied, unsuccessfully, to Chelsea on previous occasions so was delighted to be accepted this year, probably as a result of winning a silver medal at the Tatton Garden Flower Show. The night before the judging at Chelsea, competitors are allowed in to the marquees from 9pm Sunday until 6am Monday to prepare their exhibits. At seven o'clock a friend of her's phoned to say that the results were on the internet and Barbara had won Gold. Later that day, which is open only for Royalty and celebrities, she was allowed in to view the show. We all ooh'd and aah'd over the medal which she brought along for us to see. Following the talk Barbara demonstrated a stunning arrangement made totally of various palm leaves fashioned into flowers; she then attempted to teach us how make the palm leaf flowers. It was an interesting and fun evening.

Our ‘shopping trip’, on 5th November, was to Hop Pocket a collection of farm buildings, transformed into a variety of small shops, near Hereford. We began the day with coffee and biscuits at the Celtic Manor, in the presence of the owner Sir Terry Matthews. On our arrival at Hop Pocket , most of the ladies had a pre-‐arranged seasonal lunch followed by time to browse through the shops. There was an emporium selling craft items, china, cards, Christmas gifts etc. and wine in the main converted barn. In others, there were small shops selling shoes, clothes, furniture, antiques and also a small garden centre. The members enjoyed the day and felt it was a change from our usual shopping trips.
z
Guild members enjoyed a visit to the Grand Theatre on November 19th to see The Abbey Players production of “Singing in the Rain” A very well produced show with an excellent cast and outstanding principals.
z
One of our longest serving, much loved members, Beryl Bevan, celebrated her 90th Birthday on 25th November so we had a party in her honour on 26th.Beryl is well known for her sense of fun, ability to see the good in everyone and everything, and her caring nature. She and Mona Diment arranged many summer trips for Guild and often participated in a ‘double act’ at Members Own evenings. She supplied a cake and wine to thank members for the love, friendship and support over the years and Guild supplied the “nibbles” and presented her with a

beautiful bouquet of flowers. The entertainment was provided by Viv Davies who told some anecdotes and read poetry she had written for the occasion; Ann Gay read a story she had written and Gwynneth told a rather risque joke! Beryl was delighted when Father Tim arrived to wish her a Happy Birthday and also when she was presented with flowers from the Guild. She really enjoyed her, much deserved, special evening as did all those present.

Barry Evans was our guest speaker recently and gave us a very interesting talk on Dylan Thomas, who was born in Swansea on 27th October 1914. He was extremely popular in America, toured there many times and earned much money. His father had been the English master at Swansea Grammar School but Dylan disliked school very much and was only good at English. His first job was at the Evening Post but his parents financially supported him throughout. He became a poet and spent 20 years in London where he married Caitlin in 1939, sharing a Bohemian way of life.Eventually, they moved to the boathouse at Laugharne but drink still governed his life and he died in America in 1953 aged just 39 years. As a nation, we either liked him or loathed him. America loved him. The royalties are still rolling in from his writing.Barry concluded the evening by showing us slides of events by Dunvant Choir, of which he is the Chairman.

Health & Safety does a Risk Assessment on the Little Donkey“Little Donkey, little donkey on the dusty roadGot to keep on plodding onwards, with your precious load”
The RSPCA has issued strict guidelines with regard to how heavy a load a donkey of small stature is permitted to carry. Also in the guidelines are compulsory feeding breaks and at least one rest break in a 4 hour period. Due to the risk of pollution from the dusty road, Mary and Joseph are required to wear face masks. The “little Donkey” has expressed his discomfort as being labelled ‘little’ and would prefer to being simply referred to as ‘Mr Donkey’. Comments upon his height or otherwise are considered to be a breach of his equine rights.

Free Will OfferingHave you ever considered what happens to your weekly offering after you place it on the collection plate? Please let me tell you! After the service, the plate is taken into the vestry where the two wardens open and write on each envelope the amount it contained. The cash is then counted and entered, by denomination, onto a weekly sheet for the treasurer's information and is locked, into the safe. The wardens at St Martins also have to open and count their receipts before delivering them to the treasurer.Sometime later, the treasurer will go to the Church to collect all of it. The treasurer then has to check that the monies collected agree with the total of the envelopes before completing a paying in slip and driving to the bank which is situated in Portland Street, Swansea. The envelopes are then taken to Mr Ken James, the Gift Aid secretary for entry into his records for him to reclaim the tax each quarter. As you can see, it is very time consuming involving several officers of the church who all give their time voluntarily. If you have a bank account YOU can help them! The Church in Wales has a system by which monies are collected by Direct Debit then paid, together with Gift Aid tax recovered, into our Parish bank account each month. This system has been sanctioned by the PCC.Alternatively, you can set up a Standing Order to pay your Free Will Offering directly into the Parish bank account, also saving you the trouble of filling an envelope each week. Please see Pam Davies, if you would like more information about either method.

RecommendationsFor those who followed my suggestions last year all I can say is ‘Sit’ and you should have a picture of an elephant crushing a n’erdowell. The same author has come up with another in the same humorous style ‘The Lady who saved the King of Sweden’. Perhaps not as subtle as the One Hundred Year Old Man but nevertheless well worth looking at. For those who love thrillers, can I recommend ‘I am Pilgrim’ by Terry Hayes. This is the most entertaining book I have read this year and is so very topical. It concerns a plot to introduce a nasty disease into society; take it from there, you’ll enjoy it. Another, although it takes some time before your interest is really caught, is ‘A Cuckoo’s Calling’ by Robert Galbraith, the nom de plume of J.K. Rowlings of Harry Potter fame. Other authors I have enjoyed during the year have been John Williams, Charles Cummings, Philip Kerr and Andrew Taylor not forgetting characters Jack Reacher and Harry Hole who keep you wanting more of their exploits.
Turning to the world of films and DVD’s of course I started off the year watching a group of film noires of the 40’s and 50’s and revisited ‘The Glass Key’, ‘This Gun for Hire’, ‘Crossfire’, ‘Murder my Sweet’; all thoroughly enjoyable. Running through this year’s releases ‘12 years a slave’, ‘Saving Mr Banks’, ‘The Artist’, ‘The Railway Man’, ‘The Monuments Men’, ‘Nebraska’, ‘Philomena’, ‘Private Peaceful’ and ‘Sunshine on Leith’ are all worth a look. If you do happen to go along with my recommendations I would love to talk over the whys and wherefores of your experience. So, interesting reading and pleasurable watching to you all.

TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS
Once again it's Advent Time, time for us to be,Busy wrapping presentsand setting up the tree.lt seems we have so many things,to think of and to do,We may forget that Christmas, has a deeper meaning too.A meaning that goes far beyond, the things the eye can see,Such as Holly wreaths, Mistletoe, and Gifts beneath the tree. For these are only Symbols,of what happened Christmas morn,When in a little manger,GOD's only Son was born.GOD put HIM here upon this Earth, with one idea in mind.To put New Hope around the World, and LOVE in all Mankind. So even though we're busy, and have many things to do,Let's not forget that Christmas, has a deeper Meaning too. Eugene W. Miller (Adapted)

Mothers’ UnionOur first speaker, in November, was Mr Andrew Jones, Fundraising Events & Corporate Manager of Shelter Cymru, a sister to Shelter in England. Problems in Wales are different to those in England. Shelter Cymru is specifically designed to address the situation, aimed at helping people to find a home and work. So far, this year, 15,000 people came to Shelter Cymru looking for help, with 140,000
using the website. At any one time in Wales, there are 150 or more people sleeping rough. There are many causes of homelessness. Andrew quoted some examples, such as losing a job, redundancy and being unable to keep up with the
mortgage repayments or rent and bad decision making, but all need help before spiraling into debt. Wages are low in Wales; average earnings are around £20,000 per annum in the country overall but, in Swansea, around £14,000. In comparison, the average house price is £140,000. Mortgage companies will lend up to £70,000 but repayment can be difficult. In families, both parents must work and grandparents often help with money and childcare. Many are unable to afford a house until they reach the age of 37 or older. Shelter Cymru operates in 22 unitary authorities, all case workers are trained in legal matters and often have to attend court cases. 40% of those seeking help have some kind of disability, often mental health problems. The City Council offers help, particularly when temperatures drop in winter, to offer accommodation. 80% of new claimants for housing benefit are in work but the need for use of food banks is increasing.Margaret Massey thanked Andrew for sparing valuable time to come and speak to us.

A Members Own afternoon was held on Nov 18th when some members gave a presentation on a subject of interest to them. Barbara Rowe read a poem she had written about St Hilary’s Mothers’ Union -‐ one definitely destined for the magazine, Barbara. Phyllis Davies then read one of her favourite poems by John Betjeman ‘Diary of a Country Mouse’. Margaret Thomas, a native of Sarawak and Brunei brought some traditional items to show. First a family heirloom, three 24ct gold brooches joined by fine chains which are worn down the front of a blouse, given to Margaret by her mother. Then, a heavy woven silver belt with a large embossed silver clasp, both worn for special occasions in her native country. Perhaps Margaret wore them when she married Andrew in Brunei.

Margaret Massey has a special interest in paper weights made by an American artist, Mayeal Ward. His exquisite work of minute floral arrangements in glass were a joy to view and were handed round very carefully to be viewed.Medals were Julie Cole’s subject. Julie joined the RAF in 1956 and gave a brief resumé of her service and her later WVS service, showing the medals awarded plus some miniatures of medals her father had been awarded from the First World War. He was at the Battle of the Somme at the start of the campaign. Finally, Carole, Branch Leader, read a poem by Christina Rosetti ‘Love Came Down at Christmas’ which has been sung as a carol. We heard it set to music to 2 different tunes. We then enjoyed tea with homemade cakes and mince pies and boosted our funds with a Bring & Buy sale. A different and enjoyable meeting.
