2nd March The wonder and beauty of Gods creation. An easy start to the day. I was picked up by the Rev'd Aloni and we drove through some pretty rundown townships on road which were no more than Farm tracks. He explained that he is working with his home community as well as being in charge of the mission department and setting up a Bible college. At home he has plans to plant many trees and coffee. He has a maize grinding machine similar to Luweero by the sound of it. He only needs about £300 to install this though.
We set out for our destination on quite good roads until we turned off the main road when we got onto dust tracks with lumps bumps and crevices but not the worst road I had been on. The traffic on Ugandan roads is a nightmare; crazy drivers and the boda. Bodas are the worst. We nearly hit one head on in all the dust. Most people drive all over the place to avoid pot holes! We drove through small villages which contained semi permanent dwellings - mud huts. Most places had a cow and or goats and chickens. We stopped to give someone a lift -it turns out that she was the lady who ran the "cafe" at the car park where we were going.
He took me to Sissi Falls which was absolutely beautiful. Looking at that, how could you deny Gods existence? It was described as the "Garden of Eden and I can see why. The lush green grass and foliage, the beautiful trees and coloured flowers. We walked up to where we could feel the spray on our faces, which was lovely and refreshing on a boiling hot day. We then climbed down and sat and had tea and soda and some ground nuts.
Then back for lunch which Aloni sorted out on route. We arrived at the Sarlat Coffee house and restaurant and Aloni was not very happy when he was told that the fish fillet he had ordered for us both was not available, so we reverted to chicken and chips - a treat.
Aloni has a wife who heads the Social Sciences department with Mamma Bishop working in the Education department of Ugandan Christian University. They have two children. It seems that the average is 4.

After lunch we returned to the residence. No sooner had he dropped me off than he returned. So for the rest of the afternoon and early evening it was sermon tweaking and working out what could be left out when, in two of the services, I would be translated. And also dealing with dodgy signals to set up his iPad which I eventually managed to do. The Gidudus are a lovely family and most welcoming.
Just before supper out came the hymn books and we sang. Then one of the girls read a passage of scripture and a brief commentary. Then everyone shared what they had got from the passage. We then knelt down and Hannah led us in prayers including thanks for the food. Supper followed and we had a brief chat during which the Bishop told me he was feeling quite unwell, so he might not join me for the first service. He did look unwell and I told him he should rest. So off to bed early as the first service is at 7am. Need my beauty sleep more than most! 3rd March. And they each heard in their own language- via interpreters! Up early and to church for the first service at 7am. When the service started about 10 minutes late the church was half full. We walked into the strains of Gwhoddiad in Lugnadan which was the language of the first service. We also sang Onward Christian Soldiers at a speed I've never sung it at before. Refreshing. There were two offertories, one was the normal one and the other happens on the first Sunday of the month when people offer money to the church in thanksgiving for something which has happened during the month. There was also an appeal for roofing sheets for the new hall and pledge cards for those who didn't have money this week. I made a donation to the roof fund.
By the time I came to preach, the church was fairly full. My interpreter was Amos, the curate at the cathedral. So I had to edit as I went along otherwise they would have been listening to a 40-50 minute sermon. He did remarkably well considering it was his third language. At this service we had the jolly choir and it was a Communion service. Interestingly, I thought, they give communion in individual small glasses which they started with the onset of Aids.
Then it was straight on to the next service. Though I did have to have a comfort break. The second service started about 9.15 which should have started at 9am. No one was worried especially those who arrived up to half way through just in time for my sermon. The congregation was predominantly young people aged 17 plus. We had the mission choir, the thanksgiving, the appeal and a MU auction at the end. My sermon seemed to go ok. I got a couple of rounds of applause and we sang Onward Christian Soldiers at an altogether more sedate speed! I was allowed to leave whilst they auctioned off the Matoke and mangos and whatever. When I got in the vestry I was presented with a chapati, and some

water. The congregation numbered somewhere around 800. It was now 11:05 , next service at 11:00am.! After the service I met someone from Huddersfield who runs a project that brings library books/books for children out to Ugandan schools; she sometimes teams up with Pont who are a charity based in Pontypridd which works in Mbale. Also a guy from Bavaria.
We started about 11:20. This time it was in the local language. Same as before. This time my interpreter was a translator Rev Milton, who is translating the Bible and liturgy into that language. The sermon seemed to flow and, with editing, it took about 1/2 hour. I nipped back to the residence to pick up some gifts as I was going to lunch with Archdeacon Titus, the Vicar of the Cathedral. I had a brief chat with the Bishop who had been resting when Hannah came and said someone wanted to meet me. Professor Timothy congratulated me on my sermon and reiterated a story I had told.
We then went to lunch, the Archdeacon's for lunch with Rev Alice -the chaplain of the University, and Rev Amos. Another large meal beautifully cooked. I discovered that the Archdeacon was a tailor and had trained his wife. She had a stall on the market but had a disaster just before Christmas, two years ago I think, when the market burnt down. They lost two machines and a lot of material.
After lunch it was back to the residence for a quick nap and freshen up only to find Professor Timothy and his grand daughter visiting. I was picked up at 4:00 African time (20 past) then went back to the Archdeacon's for tea and biscuits. Then Alice and I went to the fellowship which was in full swing when we got there. After a few worship songs and some prayers I was introduced as the guest preacher, which came as a bit of a surprise. However in Africa you should always be prepared. I talked about prayer as a cell phone conversation (a youngish congregation) and Adoration Confession Thanksgiving Supplication Silence ACTSS - an old confirmation lesson. At just after 6pm it was time to go but not before I spoke with the head of laity and a couple of others. Back for a relaxing night of sermon preparation for tomorrow. Bible study and prayers were followed by supper and farewells to the Bishop who was leaving for Kampala for a Bishops' meeting early tomorrow. Having rested he was looking much better than he had earlier in the day.
Yours in Christ Our Vision: A family, rooted in Christ, committed to transforming lives by: Gathering as God’s people – Growing more like Jesus – Going out in the power of the Spirit.

Parish News We pray for all who are ill at this time or in Nursing Homes – particularly remembering those being cared for at home and for those who are caring for them: Phyllis Harries, Emlyn Bawden, Peter Dickman, Joan Davies, Beattie Loosemore, Mary Chivers, Joyce Leonard, Olwen & John Iles. Bob Massey-Shaw sustained a fall and is now being cared for in Penybryn Nursing Home. Graham Treharne is now in Singleton Hospital Ward 7. Joan Dobbs is also in Singleton Hospital Ward 3. Canon Geoffrey Thomas and Margaret – she is caring for Geoffrey at home. To all of you - please get well soon; we are missing you.
We are pleased that David Cox is making progress after his illness and has returned to church but are sorry that Rita sustained a nasty fall and, although she is in great pain when walking, has also returned to church.
To any member of our church family who is not feeling well or is distressed at this time, please contact Father Tim.
There are a small number of trained pastoral care visitors in our Parish who will always try to accommodate a request.
Congratulations : Edna Cattley’s grandson Rhodri and his wife Katy have been blessed with a baby girl, Cadi May, 8 lb 13 oz. Grand-daughter for Norma and David Griffiths.
Thank You from Canon Geoffrey Thomas Margaret and I have been touched by the prayers, concern, cards, telephone calls and visits from members of St Hilary’s Church and St Martin’s Church during these past months. My recovery is slower than I would have liked but, as you know, I am not a patient person – I want to be up doing things. I am looking forward to the day when I am back in the Parish with you all. Thank you to each and every one of you.
We were all sad to hear of the death of Val Elliott. Val had been ill for some time, but she will always be remembered as a much respected teacher in Dunvant School – loved by staff and children alike, a village archivist and a member of many Dunvant and church organisations. Val was a faithful member of St Martin’s Church – it was a joy to sit with her at their Christmas Dinner. She was a proud mother and enjoyed talking about her children – Phil, Matt and Charlotte. Sadly, her husband Aubrey died two years ago. We send our love and sympathy to Val’s family and her many friends.
We give thanks for Val’s life and we pray for those who face life without her, and the adjustments of bereavement.
Geraldine Rees would like to thank everyone for their condolences and sympathy upon the recent death of her mother, Jean Ramsay. Special thanks to Father Tim who attended the funeral in Ammanford whilst still jetlagged after his return from America. Your presence was greatly appreciated.

Our worshipping communityRosemarie Evans, on her powered buggy, is able to get about near her converted cottage on Dunvant Road. She is a member of the church and has in the past attended regularly. She is visited regularly by Pat and Hugh and Gillian, on a regular pattern (they are part of our pastoral visitors team) and she does look forward to their visits. I happened to call in the other day and received a generous welcome. We spoke of many things including the fact that her converted cottage was one of the very first houses in the Dunvant area and pre dates the beginnings of the village in 1860. The cottage can be traced back into the 1700’s. It has thick stone walls and is warm in winter and cold in summer. She delights in the conversion which makes it an ideal home for 21st century living.
If you get to know Rose you will meet a person who does not let misfortunes get her down in fact although she has had many tragedies in her life she still carries on smiling and looking at the good side of life. Her husband Brian, who passed away not so long ago, is well remembered for his ability on the soccer field. He played for the Swans and was also picked to play for Wales on a number of occasions. It is of him I mainly
spoke for I was told that on the occasion of the Swans celebrating their 100 years of activity ten plaques were unveiled in the new Liberty Stadium. Each of these plaques bore the name of those men who had brought honour to the club... and one of them was Rosemarie’s husband Brian.
She, and her two sons, Richard and Christian were invited to the Liberty for the unveiling ceremony. They had a splendid day, one that she will always remember. So the next time you visit the Liberty stadium perhaps you will come across these plaques....and when you do, think of St Hilary’s and St Martin’s and the great variety of peoples who worship together.
David Morgan.

Clyne Deanery Conference The next Clyne Deanery conference on Tuesday 7th May at the Parish Hall, Holy Cross Church, Fairwood Road, West Cross, Swansea will include the AGM and Deanery Trienniel elections which take place this year throughout the diocese.
Below is important information about the main business of the meeting from our Area Dean, Revd Phillip Gwynn. It is to be an open meeting so please make it as widely known as you can. Plans for the future will involve every church member so it is vital that everyone has the opportunity to understand what is being discussed and can contribute to it.
“The topic of the moment is the Harries Report and in particular Ministry Areas. The Diocese of Monmouth has done great work in looking at this. The Church-in-Wales Standing Committee has set up an Implementation Group, to look at developing the themes that have come out of the Harries Report. The Implementation Group’s first task will be to review the report’s recommendations in the light of initial responses, and to advise the Standing Committee on priorities for taking forward those recommendations and the allocation of recommendations to different Church bodies for consideration. The make-up of this Provincial review body is...Mrs. Helen Biggin (Llandaff), Rt. Revd. Andrew John (Bishop of Bangor), Revd. Paul Mackness (St.Davids), Mr. James Turner (St. Asaph) and Mr. Nigel King (Swansea & Brecon).
I am very pleased that Nigel King has agreed to lead us in discussion on the Ministry Areas topic on 7th May. Nigel is a Lay-Reader in the Three Cliffs Benefice, who worships at St.Mary’s Pennard. Nigel has a professional background in market research, advertising and marketing. He is particularly interested in new business development, and problem solving and idea generation techniques. He is a member of the Governing Body and Standing Committee, and of the Church in Wales Provincial Stewardship Executive.
I suggest that in the light of the importance of the topic and the high profile of the speaker, we open this up to anyone interested to come along.”

Ladies GuildWe began our summer session with a very light-hearted talk about Ivor Novello given by Howard Mortimore. Ivor’s mother was named Clara
Novello Davies. She was very musical and played the harmonium in the local chapel; her parents were unhappy when she married a coal miner, David Davies. Their son was born in 1893 and was named Ivor; it was said he had the “biggest nose in Glamorgan”. Ivor was very talented musically from a young age so his mother, who was choir mistress of the Royal Welsh Ladies Choir, encouraged him. At three years of age he sang for Clara Butt and, at 8, sang a
duet with Adelina Patti. An accomplished pianist and singer, he won the competition for Boy Soprano at the Eisteddford. He went to Oxford where he became soloist in the college choir. During World War 1, he wrote patriotic songs, such as, “Keep the Home Fires Burning”. In 1924 he changed his name by Deed Poll to Novello. By the late 1920’s he was a famous film star, composer and actor, playing opposite many of the famous leading ladies of the day including Gladys Cooper who was very keen to marry him. She did not understand that he was “not the marrying kind”. Ivor acted in films, played Henry V, wrote the screenplay for the 1932 film of Tarzan with Johnny Weissmuller and wrote and produced many musicals such as “Careless Rapture”, “Perchance to Dream”, “Kings Rapture” and many more. Songs from his shows became the hits of the day, so Howard included recordings of Richard Tauber singing “We’ll gather Lilacs” and Ivor and Marie Ellis singing “My Dearest Dear”. Several of his songs were included in the film “Gosford Park” Ivor died in 1951; he had pre-arranged that Harrods take care of his funeral. Four plaques have been erected in his memory in London. The Strand Theatre has been renamed The Novello and his statue stands in front of the Millennium Centre in Cardiff. It was a most enjoyable evening.
Brian Davies came along on April 17th to tell us about the Inns and Pubs of Mumbles, which is now described as the Mumbles mile!
Parish of Killay May 2013 15
In 1866 at the height of the oyster boom, there was a great deal of “drunkenness and scandalous behaviour”, so in 1881 the Sunday closing act became law. There was, however, a loop-hole that “bone fide” travellers could buy drinks as long as they had travelled a minimum of 3 miles, but not during times of divine worship. This encouraged people from Swansea to flock to Mumbles on Sundays but enraged the chapel goers. Brian told us of the history, along with old photographs, of many of the old inns beginning with The Rhondda which was opposite the terminus of the Mumbles train. The White Rose was opened in 1850’s but has expanded since then. The Costa Coffee in The Dunns was originally the Nags Head and is reputed to be haunted by the ghost of a cellar man who was drowned during a flood. The Village Inn, one of the oldest, was opened in 1730’s as The New Inn but has changed name several times since. The Hancock was once called The Waterloo and is now the Welsh HQ of the Monster Raving Loony Party. Dylan Thomas was a regular visitor at several of the pubs including The Antelope at which the Dylan Thomas Society was founded. It was a rather rough establishment but was transformed by Timothy Perkins after he became landlord in 1953, and it is now closed. We were taken along “the mile” being told interesting stories of all of the inns, ending up at The Pier which was opened at the same time as Mumbles Pier, both of which celebrated their centenary in 1998. It was a most interesting talk but sadly Brian did not bring along any samples for us to taste!

Mothers’ Union Swansea, Your Story in Photographs, a community archive, was founded in 1999 with a Heritage lottery
fund. Co-ordinator Mr Roy Kneath came to enlighten us at our first April meeting. A life long resident of Swansea, Roy is a keen photographer who used to have a studio in Swansea and lectured at Swansea Metropolitan University. He gave a laptop presentation showing old images of Swansea and its people. Photography was invented just 2 years after Victoria became Queen; she had her photograph taken in 1844 although a Camera Obscura was first used by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1664. Swansea’s first studio opened in 1842. Pioneering local photographers included Fox Talbot; Emma, the wife of John Dillwyn Llewellyn, was the first woman photographer, and Rev Calbert Jones. Roger Fenton was the first war photographer during the Crimean War. Roy stressed the four essential words for photography, WHO, WHERE, WHEN and WHY should be marked on the back of all photos. Many studios sprung up in Swansea, including the famous Chapmans, and he became Mayor of Swansea. Roy showed images of the docks being built, the 1865 railway accident there, the market on the sands at the Slip, many visiting celebrities and photos of the Blitz.
Roy now runs workshops to help identify old photos. Julie Cole thanked Roy for coming to talk to us.
We headed to Brecon on 8th April with members from Sketty, Newton and Llwynderw for the Diocesan Festival combined with Ladyday in the Cathedral. Branch Leader Carole Pickard was commissioned as Deanery Leader. The theme of the Bishop’s sermon was ‘Here I am Lord, I come to do your will’, and how it may conflict with ‘Thy will be done’, we cannot always reconcile the two. After the service we proceeded to the Abercrave Inn for an excellent meal. Thank you to all who helped to organise the day.
The proverbial pin could have been heard at our second meeting when Killay Writers Circle came to entertain us with their original compositions. Some comical, some quite sad, like the first song sung by Ken with his guitar, about sending sons to war. The lyrics were written by his wife Linda. We heard poems from Brian and Linda, Jill and Myrtle. Suze read two short stories, both relevant to modern life. The group were pleased to see Gwyneth Prestwood with us that afternoon as her late husband Fred was a founder member of the Writers Circle. Enid Rotherham thanked all the participants for an entertaining afternoon. Sandra Banks

Music Society There were 24 members present on the 15th April for another superb evening. Our guest, or victim, for our version of Desert Island Discs, was Howard Phillips. Howard was one of 6 children; he was born in Llansamlet but grew up in Trallwyn. His mother had died when he was very young so he was brought up by family members. Although he was separated from his siblings, they all remained very close. Sadly, his father died when Howard was 14 and he left school shortly after. He started employment but had already discovered his love for music, particularly musicals. As soon as he could, he had singing lessons and joined all the amateur groups that he could. He worked, mainly for BP and in 1971, spent 7 months working in Italy where he had plenty of opportunities to see many famous performers including Luciano Pavarotti.
Howard had left school out of necessity but always craved for a higher education, so he took an access to learning course. He eventually took early retirement and did a History degree. At the same time he worked with the BBC as an extra and eventually progressed to small parts. He is
currently appearing in Pobol y Cwm. In 1974 and 1992 he sang in the National Eisteddfod and was in the final 3 both times. His choice of music was
Habanera from Carmen, Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes from The Gondoliers, Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat from Guys & Dolls, Il Mio Tesoro from Don Giovanni, Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, Pavillion Duet from The Merry Widow, King Ever Glorious from Stainer’s Cucifixion and finally a recording of Y Nos sung by Howard Phillips.
Next month we are back to the 2nd Monday when our guest will be David Morgan.

Pentecost – the birthday of the Church Pentecost took place on the well established Jewish festival of Firstfruits, which was observed at the beginning of the wheat harvest. It was exactly 50 days after the Passover, the time of Jesus’ crucifixion. A feast day to celebrate the country’s wheat harvest does not sound exactly world-changing, but that year, it became one of the most important days in world history. For Pentecost was the day that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit - the day the Church was born. Jesus had told his apostles that something big was going to happen, and that they were to wait for it in Jerusalem, instead of returning to Galilee. Jesus had plans for his apostles – but he knew they could not do the work themselves – they would need his help. And so the apostles and disciples waited in Jerusalem, praying together for several days. And then on that fateful morning there was suddenly the sound as of a mighty rushing wind. Tongues of flame flickered on their heads, and they began to praise God in many tongues – to the astonishment of those who heard them. The curse of Babel (Genesis 11: 1- 9) was dramatically reversed that morning. That morning the Holy Spirit came to indwell the apostles and disciples of Jesus: and the Church was born. The Christians were suddenly full of life and power, utterly different from their former fearful selves. The change in them was permanent. Peter gave the first ever sermon of the Christian church that morning: proclaiming Jesus was the Messiah. His boldness in the face of possible death was in marked contrast to the man who had denied Jesus 50 days before. And 3,000 people responded, were converted, and were baptised. How’s that for fast church growth! Of course Pentecost was not the first time the Holy Spirit had acted in this world. All through the Old Testament there are accounts of how God’s Spirit guided people and strengthened them. But now, because of Christ’s death and resurrection, he could INDWELL them. From now on, every Christian could have the confidence that Jesus was with them constantly, through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
