Advisory for Orchardists of Snow/Rainaffected areas of Jammu Province.Remove the snow from the fruit tress manual-ly by shaking them.Drain out excess water from the orchards bymaking drainage channels.Reduce the canopy of the fruit tree by pruningand provide support to the plants. If the trees are partially uprooted slowly backthe trees to the original position after heavypruning and provide proper support/ staking tothe main trunk to prevent further fall/move-ment. Staking of the main trunks should be done inthe opposite direction of the pullback to pre-vent further movement. If the top portion of the tree is broken, slantingcut the damaged branch 2-3 inches below thebroken point and apply Bordeaux/ Chaubatiapaste on the cut surface. If the scaffold branch is broken and bark is stillintact. Bring the branch to the original positiontying with a rope and/using stainless steelnails. Ensure that the union remains tight andapply Bordeaux/Chaubtia paste on the cutsurface. If the roots have become exposed /nakedimmediately cover the roots with soil to avoidfurther damage.Fertilisation after the rescue would help stim-ulate growth. High rainfall can leach essentialnutrients from the soil, which can affect planthealth. Nutrients such as iron and nitrogencan be replaced through the use of fertiliserTrim tall fruit tree from tops and clear thebranches near homes and cattle sheds.Remove the stagnated water from the straw-berry fields also.Replace the wet straw with dry straw from thestrawberry fields to prevent the fruit if any fromrottening.Maintain orchard sanitation by removingdebris and damaged plant parts/twigs.The orchardists are requested to contact theDepartmental authorities/or call at Toll freeNo. 1800-180-7050 for more help.
