REFLECTION 3.4 CULTURE SHOCK

LESSON PLAN IDEA FOR CULTURE SHOCK A class segment: ‘a problem shared’

Class is a relatively cohesive unit who have started the course/arrived in Ireland at the same time,

and are perhaps at similar stages in terms of culture shock. I think it’s important for students to

realise that they are not alone in going through culture shock and that they can help each other

through this difficult time.

Stage 1 5 mins

Students write down what their first impressions of Ireland were

What did they like? What excited them?

What did they dislike? Students share their stories in small groups

Stage 2 5 mins

Students write down the things they are finding most difficult about being here, and pass their answers to the teacher. The teacher writes the issues up on the board

Stage 3 10 mins

Students work in small groups, and drawing on their own experience, address each of the issues one by one, finding solutions or thinking of things that could help.

Stage 4 10

The groups break up, students sit with a new group, and share their ideas with the new group and so on until all of the ideas have been exchanged around all of the groups

Stage 5 5 mins

Students vote on the remedy they would like to try first, and arrange to try it together e.g. - bring foods from home country one lunchtime for all to share - making a pact to play some sports/get exercise together x times a week
