Beginning Of The End
• The North Virginia Army lost many
of its officers. The Confederates
disdained Maryland after this battle.
• The North felt the war had shifted in
their favor.
• Lincoln decided to deliver the
Emancipation Proclamation.
• Europe had been close to mediation
on behalf of the South, but after
Antietam they backed away for good.
However, France did try for a while to
persuade England and Russia to help
the South and restore the cotton
shipments.
Beginning Of The End
• The Emancipation Proclamation
announced a new war aim that
foreshadowed universal emancipation.
• Britain now adopted pro-Union
resolutions. The anti-slavery position
gave the United States a substantial
foothold in Europe.
•Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas
corpus and authorized military trials
for rebels and their abbetors.
