A number of teachers from various year

levels were questioned from the schools

where we are currently doing our

placement. The following are their

thoughts on creativity and assessment

that promotes creativity.

Creativity Research

...thinking outside the box ...using the right side of the brain ...a talent or gift that a person possesses...a skill that can be developed to some extent...coming up with something original

Creativity is...

•Is usually done in KLA areas such as Art, Drama, Technology and possibly Science. It doesn’t really fit in Maths assessment tasks.

•Is used in assessment tasks where artistic or technology skills are used.

•Is used only in certain assessment tasks. Needs to be used in balance with assessments that focus on developing more academic skills.

Assessment that promotes creativity:

‘Imagination is more important than

knowledge.’

‘Anyone who has never made a mistake, has never tried anything new.’ Albert Einstein

1879- 1955

(Quotes by Harris, 1995)

"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the

opposite direction."

1847- 1931

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

(Quotes from BrainyMedia, 2009)

‘I start where the last man left off.’

There's a way to do it better - find it.

To have a great idea, have a lot of them.

To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of

junk.

Orville 1871- 1948 & Wilbur 1867- 1912

1899-1900 the brothers designed and tested their theory of flight

‘If we worked on the assumption that what is accepted as true really is true, then there would be little hope for advance’

Quotes by The Wright Brothers (About.com, 2009)

“If birds can glide for long periods of time, then… why can’t I ?”

“Does not create something out of nothing; it uncovers, selects,

re-shuffles, combines, synthesises already existing

facts, ideas, faculties, and skills.”

Arthur Koestler, cited from- (Assessing Creativity, AUR Faculty Dev. 2007)

“It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be

wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.”

Edward De Bono

“Conditions for creativity are to be puzzled; to concentrate; to accept

conflict and tension; to be born everyday; to feel a sense of self.”

Erich Fromm

(Quotes by- Jone Johnson Lewis, 1995- 2009)

The Pacemaker

‘Dr Chang was an original thinker who was never happy with currenttechnologies and was always pushing the boundaries to think of

something more effective.’

(Information and quote from The Victor Chang Cardiac Research institute)

1936-1991

Chang was a pioneer for the modern era of heart transplantations, who began the heart transplantation fund in 1893

1929- 1993

Fred Hollows pioneered the introduction of modern cataract surgery to developing countries, helping restore the sight of thousands each

year.  Hollows was named as Australian of the Year in 1990 in recognition of his ground-breaking work.

(The Fred Hollows Foundation, 2009)

Inspired the era of home computers

Gates and Allen founded Microsoft in 1976.Versions of Microsoft can now be found on around 90%

of the worlds computers.

(Future Publishing Limited, 2006-09)(Quote from BrainyMedia.com, 2009)

“If I'd had some set idea of a finish line, don't you think I would have crossed it years ago?”

‘Googol’ is a mathematical term for the numeral 1, followed by 100 zero’s. The use of this term represents their mission to organise a seemingly infinite

amount of information on the web.

Larry Page and Sergery Brin created Google in 1996 but it was called BackRub. The men decided to change the name to Google, which came from the word

‘googol.’

(Answers Corporation, 2009)

Top: The Temptation of St. AnthonyBottom: The Persistence of Memory

“Those who do not want to imitate anything, produce nothing”

Salvador Dali.

(Quote from ArtQuotes.net, 2009)

‘Portrait of Maya with a Doll’ 1938

“Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and

asked why not.”

1881-1973

(BrainyMedia, 2009)

“Creative thinking may mean simply the realization that there's no particular virtue

in doing things the way they always have been done”

Rudolf Flesch

(ThinkExist 1999-2006)

“A dream is your creative vision for your life in the

future. You must break out of your current comfort zone and become comfortable with the unfamiliar and the unknown.”

Denis Waitley

(ThinkExist 1999-2006)

When creativity is promoted through assessment and

learning, students will experience greater success in a future where creative skills will

become a necessity.(Gebhardt, Mewha, Scott, West, 2009)
