Cost of Corrosion

• The total direct cost of corrosion was determined to be $279 billion per year, which is 3.2 percent of the then U.S. gross domestic product (GDP).

• Indirect cost to the user (society costs) are conservatively estimated to be equal to the direct costs.

Traditional Method

Unchanged for the past 50 years

1. Sandblast

2. Primer

3. One or Multiple Coats

Why is there only limited success?

• Blast is made• Coating application is delayed• Surface is bloomed or microscopic flash rust has developed

before application -- 100% of the time

• Most Corrosion coatings are “Glue-on-to-surface”

• TOPICAL Coatings Perform Optimally At SSPC-SP10 (NACE 2 or S.a 2.5 Surface Preparation)

Solution

Rust Grip®

• Minimal Surface Preparation

• Paint Directly on Rust and Firmly Bonded Paint

• Reduce Total Cost of Ownership

5/1/2015 Gulf Silicone 9

How it Works

• RUST GRIP uses special low molecular weight solvents which penetrate deep into the pores, anchoring, swelling and encapsulating the surface.

• RUST GRIP Freezes the electro-chemical reaction by sealing the pores of the metal, stopping water vapor transmission.

• The heavier aluminum metallic's and oxide additives add strength to the weakened steel

Specifications and Testing

• ASTM B117 – Salt Spray U/V Test

• Passed 15,000 Hours • Perfect score – 10 at only 150 microns DFT (6 mils dry-

single coat)

•ASTM E1795 – Non Reinforced Liquid Coating Encapsulation

• Adhesion – 5A .• Tensile Strength – 6780 psi• Pull Off Strength – 1400 psi• Flame Spread Index – 5• Elongation – 10%• Water vapor transmission – 0.22 perms• Direct Impact – 90 in. lbs

5/1/2015 Gulf Silicone 11

ASTM B117

• 15000+ Hour Salt Fog Spray Test

• Equivalent to 30 years

• 500 Hour w/ Scribe

• No bubbles or undercutting along the scribe

• 32 C Temperature

5/1/2015 Gulf Silicone 12

• Most Consistent Performer

• Exceeded Adhesion Requirements

• No other coating performed at the same level

• Only ‘3 in 1’ coating solution to pass rust evaluation requirement, meaning single coat

without sandblast.

CADEROCK TESTING RESULT• Recommendations• In accelerated corrosion testing Rust Grip provided superior performance

on minimally prepared steel specimens at the 40 cycle evaluation period compared to Wash Primer. Based on the results of this research it is recommended that Rust Grip be approved for use on USMC vehicles and added to the TM4795-OR/1 as an alternative pre-treatment in the CARC coating system on minimally prepared steel substrates when proper surface preparation cannot be accomplished.17 The accelerated corrosion testing results are expected to equate to six months of field exposure, therefore the use of Rust Grip as an alternative pre-treatment should be

• considered a temporary repair; it is not intended for permanent protection. Further testing should be performed………. Entire report is available upon request.5/1/2015 Gulf Silicone 41

Limitations

• Limited overcoat window

• Reacts with “Zinc Rich Primers”, but not galvanized or zinc-alum metals.

• Only comes in silver color

• Certain surfaces may require a brush off blast [SA1], Pack Rust and Scale must be removed.

INSULATION FROM HEAT• INSULATION -- TWO TYPES OF HEAT INSULATION• 1. REFLECTION OF RADIATION HEAT

– UV – making up 3% of the heat– Short Wave (Visual light) making up 40% of the heat– Long Wave (Infrared) making up 57% of the heat

• 2. HOLDING HEAT OVER HOT PIPES, VALVES, BOILERS, FURNACES– Trapping heat on the surface of the skin to not allow it to escape to

the atmosphere while blocking air and moisture.– Holding heat and increasing efficiency by as much as 80% – Saving a tremendous amount of energy lossDIRECTLY RELATES TO CUI (Corrosion Under Insulation)
