CORIOLIS EFFECT

What is Coriolis Effect?

The Coriolis effect is the apparent deflection of moving objects when the motion is described relative to a rotating reference frame.

Let us consider two kids playing a ball game on a merry-go-round

Case 1 –When the merry-go-round is stationery

Case 2- When Merry-go-round is is rotating, say CCW.

We could observe that the ball took a curve path andgot deflected away to the right.

w.r.t rotating frame

Coriolis Force is a pseudo/fictious force that acts on a body in motion w.r.t a rotating frame of reference.

The direction of coriolis force is always perpendicular to the rotation axis and to the vel. of body in the rotating frame.

The coriolis effect –Causes a deflection in the global wind

PatternsIt affects any object (air parcel, missile

train) moving over a appreciable dist on earth.

MAGNUS EFFECT

The Magnus effect is the commonly

observed effect in which a spinning ball

(or cylinder) curves away from its principal

flight path.

The Magnus effect is a particular manifestation of Bernoulli’s theorem: fluid pressure decreases at points where the speed of the fluid increases.

Magnus effect can be seen in •In sport- Football, Tennis, Volley ball.•In External ballistics.
