Furry baby: When fully grown, a bear is unlikely to be mistakenfor a dog. But what about when they are babies? A man fromYongsheng County, Yunnan Province (China), did just that. When he was out looking for wild mushrooms, he came across alittle puppy, or so he thought. He took the pup home andlooked after it, but must have realized something was amisswhen the puppy grew into a very large Asian bear, which is aprotected species. The man kept the bear in a cage, but tookgood care of it. Someone reported him, and authorities claimedthe bear. The man was not fined because he was cooperativeand the bear was in good health.Escaped pigs: A security camera revealed that, in the middle ofthe night, two pigs appeared at a gas station in Upper Coomera,Queensland (Australia). When the sun came up, the porky beastsgreeted amused customers and staff, many of whom took photos. The pigs spent several hours checking out people and cars. They also enjoyed rutting around in a garden before taking anap. It turns out that the friendly, but mischievous, pair had gottenaway from their owner’s home, located not far from the gasstation. The owner soon arrived on the scene to pick up thetwo curly-tailed beasts.

Everybody’s Talking!Surprising scene: Residents of the town of Neuwied,Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany), got the shock of their lives whenthey were confronted by an African elephant wandering downa city street. The completely out-of-the-ordinary occurrence wasquickly reported to police. When they arrived, they found theelephant’s keepers, who worked for a circus that was visitingthe area, were already on the scene using their animal trainerskills to corral the large pachyderm, whose name is Kenia.Everything turned out well. There was no property damage, noone was hurt, and a calm Kenia was led back home. Beautiful cakes: An artistic woman named Elena Gnut ofKaliningrad, Russia, uses her considerable talents to make anddecorate cakes, and in the process has become a renownedpastry chef. Her often-whimsical designs are so beautiful that it’shard to imagine destroying them by eating them. Designsinclude intricate bouquets of flowers, models of fictional charac-ters, a stork carrying a baby wrapped in cloth, and an angelperched on a cloud. Her tricks include molding into differentshapes and using edible dyes of different colors to paint charac-ters and scenes on her creations. Mmmm, good!Pet mix up: A woman from Jinzhong, Shanxi Province (China),was really enjoying her new pet, but after a while she wondered ifsomething might be wrong with the Japanese Spitz puppy shehad purchased from a pet store. For instance, her pooch did notbark, and it wouldn’t eat dog food. As it grew, its tail became longand fluffy, and its face became pointed. Other dogs were afraid ofit. Eventually, she took the animal to the Taiyuan Zoo where anexpert revealed that her pet was not a dog at all, but a domesticatedwhite fox. Astonished by the news, the woman gave the fox tothe zoo so it could receive proper care.Bad voice: If you are going to be an opera singer, it’s best ifothers like the sound of your voice. Such is not the case forHeather Webb of Norwich, England. The would-be singercaused such a disturbance with her practicing that neighborsin her apartment building went to the authorities. One manlikened her screechy voice to that of a drowning cat. It tookover three years, but a judge finally banned her from singingwhile at home. It didn’t take long for Webb to disobey theorder and once again cause her neighbors to fume. This time, however, she was arrested for her noncompliance.

Everybody’s Talking!Unique discovery: At least 300 ancient Roman coins werefound in a jar in the basement of an old theater in Como,Lombardy (Italy). The coins date to the late Roman imperialera. While their historical and cultural significance is yet to bedetermined, the find has created excitement for Italy’s Ministryof Cultural Heritage and Activities. The coins were stacked inrolls inside the jar and have engravings of emperors predating474 CE. The theater in which the coins were found opened in1807 and closed in 1997. The coins could be worth millions.Cute pooches: A Japanese dog groomer is making a namefor herself thanks to her delightful results. Yoriko Hamachiyo hasa knack for turning ordinary pooches into extraordinary oneswith her whimsical and artistic talents. For example, she hasmade fluffy dogs look like sheep and punk rockers. She worksmainly with small dogs, spending at least two hours with herfour-legged clients, and she likes to post photos of her finishedproducts. Her salon is called Yorikokoro. One of her most well-known success stories was the transformation of a teacup poodleinto a perfectly shaped ball of fluff. Pizza tats: The Russian branch of a pizza chain issued a callto people interested in some unique advertising. Anyone whogot a tattoo of the chain’s logo would receive 100 pizzas ayear, for life. The promoters didn’t expect a huge response, but that’s what they got. Pictures of people’s new tattoos, along with their claims for free pizza, came in by the dozens! Finally, the chain had to limit the contest to the first 350entrants, and establish rules about the size of the tattoo and thepermitted locations on the body. Hopefully, when the contestwas cancelled, participants who hadn’t yet been inked wereable to cancel their tattoo appointments.Unique customer: At a farm supply store in Elk City,Oklahoma (U.S.), pets are allowed inside if they’re on a leash. The policy means that store staff are accustomed to seeingdogs and other small animals accompany their owners on theirshopping trips. However, employees did a double take when ashopper came into the store holding his horse by the reins. The man was dressed in a cowboy hat, chaps, and boots. Itwasn’t a prank because the man had asked permission fromthe manager before leading his “pet” into the store. Witnessesreported that the horse looked like he was a seasoned shopper.
