Cloud Landscape in AustraliaEthann Castell (MBA,PMP)ethann.castell@virtual-media.net.au

My Perspective

Engage with medium-sized businesses (<5000 staff)

Work at a number of different levels; Strategic, Management, Architecture and occasionally hands-on.

Deal with a number of vendors (IBM, Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce etc)

Attend majority of cloud events in Sydney

Seems like a Land Run

Barriers to cloud adoption

Similar to most other countries Security Data Sovereignty Hype Confusion – “cloudwashing”

Shift from talking to doing

Some examples

News Corp – AWS for on-demand QA infrastructure

IAA – Complete Office365 for less than cost of current email

One Health Organisation – SalesForce (free!) New businesses or business models

Job market as an indicator

Job market may not be the whole story… In-house IT staff Vendors, consultants and business partners Self-service

Australian data centres

Most vendors have actual or planned data centers: IBM Amazon Microsoft Rackspace Others…

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Has captured a large amount of mindshare Public events are very well attended

2012 event was a “sell out” Some confusion of product line names

EC2,S3 etc. Extremely active partner program

e.g. June had 10 – 15 partner webinars

Microsoft

Windows Azure and Office365 Seem to have got it right this time (MSN!) Leveraging established Office and SharePoint

customer base Office365 extremely attractive for many orgs

50% cheaper than IBM offering for recent client

Google

Business Apps, Cloud Platform, App Engine High brand recognition Multiple leverage points

Android, Gmail, Google+…

The others

Oracle – quiet but recent announcement of partnerships with SalesForce and Microsoft

VMWare – active but uncertainty about future IBM, HP etc ???

Thank You!
