Term 4 Week 9
Advent began on Sunday. We lit the first purple candle of the Advent wreath. Almighty God,
we begin this Advent Season as an ‘Advent People’ – people of hope, ready to do your will.
Let your blessing come upon us as we light this wreath. May it turn our hearts to you in the
days ahead. Grant us the peace and joy we long for, as we await the coming of your Son with
patient hearts. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
We are looking forward to Carols this evening and having families join us. Your
children have been practising hard and they are keen for the night ahead. We thank
Stacey and class teachers for their efforts in bringing together a lovely occasion.
Prep 2020
Yesterday our Prep 2020 students came to school for the last time for this school
year and met their teachers; Megan Tootill, a new teacher and Lauren Dow. They
have now been to school eight times in preparation for school. We are proud of the
transition program we offer our Preps and their parents. They have been introduced
to many aspects of Prep life over these introductory sessions and we look forward to
formally welcoming them as Prep students in 2020. We thank the parents and look
forward to journeying with them over the next seven years.
Great News
We are delighted to announce that Brendan Gloster (Bridie’s Dad) nominated Holy
Rosary as a recipient of Telstra funds and has been successful in this application.
Our Telstra Kids grant of $1200 will be used to provide further resources for our
Garden Club so that our students have further opportunities to plan, build and
maintain gardens for learning and playing. Thank you Brendan!
The Big Chop
Year 6 student Anthony has decided that he will chop his locks in an effort to raise
funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital as he recognises through first-hand
experience the amazing work they do. A hairdresser will come to school to chop his
hair at a school assembly in the final week of school. In the meantime, you may like
to sponsor Anthony by following the link below in this newsletter.
Holy Rosary School is committed to the safety, wellbeing and protection
of all children in our care.

Swimming
Our P-2 and Year 6 students have been participating in swimming at Kensington Pool this week.
They have given positive reports of their swimming lessons. It is just a shame that our first week
of summer hasn’t been more generous! We thank the parents who have given their time to assist
by walking to the pool with classes and assisting the changing process. Without such support this
program, and many others in our school would not happen, so we are most appreciative of your
assistance.
Fees
A separate letter outlining fees for 2020 will be issued. While fees have increased for the year,
we do remind you that fee relief is always available for families who require financial assistance.
Please do not hesitate to let me know if you need help in this way.
Traffic Issues
There have been reports of some inappropriate traffic behaviours on Gower St. While the roads
are not the jurisdiction of the school, we want our students to have the conditions for optimal
safety in and around our school. Andrew, our crossing supervisor does an excellent job of
ensuring student safety and we are most grateful for his role. Please remember our school
expectations when on the roads; they apply not only to students, but staff and parents as
well….Safety is our right and Respect is our Way.
Uniforms
Over the past weeks Parish Education Board members have been working with me to revise our
school uniforms. It is our intention to phase in a new uniform over the next 2-3 years. This
process will involve parent and student consultation. In the meantime, students should continue
to wear our uniform with pride. There are a few issues at the moment with uniform and we bring
these to your attention so that you can discuss them with your children in readiness for 2020.
Our uniform has several components and given the unreliable nature of our weather students
may dress in clothes appropriate to the weather rather than having a set summer or winter
uniform.
An attachment is provided outlining the uniform expectations. An attachment also is provided to
highlight the type of shoes that may be worn and those that are unacceptable.
-Black leather school shoes should be worn on non-sport days.
-Socks should navy or white and should not carry a visible brand or logo. These socks can be
purchased at Kmart or other similar stores.
-Hair accessories are only navy, sky blue or white.
-Nail polish and jewellery should not be worn.
-Sport uniform should only be worn on sport days, or if the teachers specify it as a requirement
for excursions.
Enjoy these final weeks of a busy term

From the Desk of the Deputy Principal – a note of
farewell
As you are all aware by now, I am soon to leave Holy Rosary to embark on another adventure
with another school community. In 2020, I will be the deputy Principal /
Religious Education Leader of Saint Joseph’s in Northcote. I am
enormously excited to face new challenges and new learnings.
Coupled with this excitement is the tremendous sorrow I feel at leaving
such an amazing community where I have lived for the past nine
years. There are way too many people to thank personally. I have
been so fortunate to work with amazing teachers, special children and
welcoming families. I would like to say thank you to you all from the
bottom of my heart and know that I take you all with me wherever I go.
I take this opportunity to say farewell, as my last day at HR will be next
Wednesday December 11. I am taking some long service leave to
attend a family wedding in New Zealand. May you all have a safe and
Holy Christmas and may God bless you.
Warmly, Fiona

PE News
Last Friday, twelve year 6 boys travelled out to Greenvale Reserve to compete in the North West
Cricket big bash finals. We had a bye for the first game and then won the last two. We finished
top of the table which meant that we played Niddrie Primary School in the final, with the winner
going on to the State Final. The boys competed very well, showing great sportsmanship and
encouraging everyone in the team, particularly those students who did not have a lot of cricket
experience. Simon and I were very proud of the way the boys represented our school and their
behaviour was noted by a couple of staff from other schools. Unfortunately, Niddrie proved too
good in the final but it was a fantastic effort from Holy Rosary.
If you think that your child is turning ten or over next year and they are considered gifted or elite
in their sporting field, you may like to enter them into the state trials to represent Victoria in the
National finals next year. I have included the link below, where you can click on the sport that
your child is involved in, and this will give you further information, such as when the closing date
for entries is, as well as the entry requirements.
“These championships offer gifted and talented students the opportunity to participate in higher levels of sporting competition against students from other Australian States and Territories.
Participation in a School Sport Victoria Team Vic state team is self-funded. As a guide it may cost between $2,000-$3,000 to participate. Costs may include uniforms, host state levies, flights, transport, accommodation and meals. Costs will vary depending on the location of the Championship, and Accommodation requirements.” School Sports Victoria https://www.ssv.vic.edu.au/team-vic
School Athletics
As our school sports at Aberfeldie had such a positive response, we are returning to this venue in
2020. We are going to try it in Term One so our date is Monday March 16th, with Wednesday
March 18th being our back up date. This will still serve as our District athletics trials.
The Arts
Last Wednesday this year’s Shared Stories Anthology was launched at Kostka Hall in Brighton.
The theme was gratitude and the guest speaker was Tim Cope, an Australian adventurer, film
maker and author. He was extremely inspiring to listen to and his speech provided an opportunity
to reflect on our own experiences of gratitude. Holy Rosary had 4 pages in this year’s Anthology
and a few families attended the launch. Meredith won an award and we had the opportunity to
hear some of the contributors as well as the concert band and the string orchestra from Kostka
Hall. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. I look forward to next year’s anthology when the theme is
respect. This theme fits with our school expectation, Respect is our way.
You’re invited to…...
The Year 5/6 Christmas Market!
We would like to extend an invitation to families to attend our Christmas Market. For Inquiry this term, the Year 5/6 students have been investigating Economics. They have created their own small businesses, which will be showcased at the
market.
It will be held over 2 dates
Tuesday, 10th of December (Year 5) and Friday, 13th of December (Year 6). The market will be from 3-3:30pm on the yard.
Gold coins would be preferred over notes. The funds will be divided amongst charities that support groups that face an
injustice. See you there!
5/6 Team.
Holy Rosary Christmas Giving Tree
Our beautiful Holy Rosary tradition is continuing again this year and we will be supporting our
Parish Vinnies group by collecting lovely Christmas food. The food will be packed into Christmas
Hampers by the Year 6 Social Justice Group and then delivered, via Vinnies, to families in need
in our Kensington neighbourhood. The hampers will provide those families, not only with some
yummy food for the Christmas Season, but also with a sense that someone cares for them at this
special time of year. The Giving Tree collection will start on Monday 2nd December and run for
two weeks. Here’s what to do:
- take an angel from the tree
- buy the Christmas food that is written on the back of the angel
- bring the food to school
- easy!
This is a great opportunity to speak with your children about the spirit of giving. You could
encourage them to be part of the process by giving up some of their own money or treat foods
and purchasing something special for someone else.
Free tickets to Western United vs Melbourne Victory.
Do you have a soccer mad young person in your home? Looking for something to do this
