Transcript of Chinook - Past and Present

The ChinookPresented by: Lillian Endo

The Chinook inhabited the area around the Columbia River in Washington, and Oregon, and the British Columbia..

Lifestyle

The Chinook lived on the west coast, in the parts of what is now Oregon and Washington state. If you've been there, you'll know that it's a rather cold climate, and it rains constantly. However, the Chinook managed to survive. They built and lived in long wooden houses, commonly called

'longhouses'.

Lifestyle (Continued)

The Chinook often put totem poles in front of their house to show their social rank, and how many generations were living there.

Lifestyle (Continued)

They lived by fishing , but most often hunted deer and elk. Like most Native Americans of their time, they traded with other tribes for things such as furs.

Lifestyle (Continued)

Apart from hunting on land and fishing, they also hunted seal and sea otter.

Religion

The Chinook had a religion similar to that of surrounding Native Americans. They believed in animal gods, and a god of creation whom they called

“Neakanie”.Among their animal gods were bears, ravens, and eagles.

Modern Day SituationMost Chinooks in present day work as lumberers and casino owners.

There are PLENTY of casinos in Washington and Oregon.

One of the casinos, 7 Cedars, is located in Sequim, Washington.
