finally standing up!

The Zapatistas are indigenous peoples who

seek to preserve tradition and win positive changes for

their communities.

Schools for Chiapas works directly with the autonomous Mayan communities of Chiapas, Mexico to support their

educational programs in the areas of literacy, health, fairer trade, and

ecological agriculture. We undertake educational projects chosen by the

communities themselves.

Chiapas is also one of the centers of cultural diversity of

North America with eight indigenous languages spoken.

Yet for centuries the indigenous peoples of Chiapas were forgotten and ignored.

On January 1, 1994

things began to change in Chiapas.
