A replacement to the existing opera house in Chicago- the current opera house causes acoustic issues for performers due to its large auditorium, which also creates an undesirable listening experience for patrons. The site for the proposed opera house is a currently vacant park directly south of Navy Pier.

The design process was inspired by the progression of experiences that patrons encounter as they arrive at the opera. There are four key locations along the primary route - each reveals its own moment of surprise to the patron. The views arrange themselves in a series from imposing to inviting as the user moves through

the opera house. This allows the exterior form of the building to mask the interior function until the auditorium reveals itself as the final surprise.

An infill project for a vacant lot on Lawrence’s downtown strip, that fulfills the need for a new public library while contextually filling in the void next to the historic Eldridge hotel.

Donald Judd MuseumCrossroads District, Kansas

The Donald Judd Museum of Contemporary Art, aims to become a catalyst for growth in the Crossroads Arts District by introducing a new iconic structure to the area, drawing attention to the community garden adjacent to the site, and by highlighting other areas of community involvement such as First Fridays.

Before designing the museum, the core concepts were embodied in a short statement about the strongest values of contemporary art museums. This exercise visually manifested itself into these eight images, which were used as a personal inspiration board. Moving forward, this reference was present throughout the design process in order to not lose sight of the original concept.

Our site, is on a prominent corner of the Crossroads District due to its adjacency to the community garden and being on axis with the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts.

In addition to the values coming from previous exercises, it was additionally important that the form of the museum resemble the characteristics of Judd’s artwork: layering, void, and proportion.

Combining all of these ideas into form manifested itself into a series of parti models which, through various iterations, evolved from the model above into the parti model below.

The stage at Epic Park is the first of multiple steps to subtly revitalize the surrounding neighborhood, as well as the previously vacant site, through efforts of community involvement.
